Stephenson, Jr., - Historian, Bock Family Association Carl Bock, born September 12, 1911 at Beason, Illinois, son of Henry and Minnie Awe Bock, had four brothers, Henry, Walter, William, and Adam, and a sister, Hilda. All reside in Logan County. He graduated from Mt. Zion rural school and Beason High School. Carl met Lillian Furman, daughter of Tilden and Clara Rode Furman of Waynesville, while she was teaching at the Mt. Zion School near their home. Lillian, born June 18, 1911, graduated from grade and high schools in Waynesville and Illinois State University. Lillian has four sisters, Bessie and Nellie, deceased, Clara Kurtz and Emma Arnfelt, and three brothers, twin Tom, Hugh and Henry, all deceased. While teaching at Mt. Zion, Lillian boarded at the Orville Atteberry home and walked the two miles to school when the roads were bad. She received $85 a month and $5 a week room and board. Carl and Lillian, married June 18, 1938, moved in the spring of 1949 to the former Dr. Balding and later Arthur Gimbel farm south of Lincoln on Rocky Ford Road. With a team of horses and $1500 worth of equipment, including tractor, etc. they started farming 400 acres, raising cattle, sheep, chickens and grain. For several years, they dressed 1000 broilers annually. They sold butter, eggs and extra vegetables to Kerpan's Grocery in exchange for groceries. They purchased the Hoelscher farm next to their home and part of the Hansch estate. I-55 took 60 acres of their land for interchange 123. Carl and Lillian are the parents of Allen, June 11, 1943, graduate of University of Illinois Law School and a professor and extension specialist in Agricultural Law, Department of Agriculture Economics at the University of Illinois. He married Kay Vogt England, has a son Matt, and resides on a farm at Fisher. Aileen, June 8, 1945, a graduate of Millikin University, married Ted Anthony, and resides at Beaumont, Texas. Ted is an engineer and Aileen teaches there. They have three children, Julie, Kristie and Scott. Jean, April 26, 1947, graduated from Illinois State University with a MBA degree. Jean Bock married Randy Netzley. She resides in Bloomington with son Jason. Carl and Lillian were 4-H leaders for twenty-nine years. They enjoy their affiliation with St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln. Lillian taught in the Mt. Zion, West Hull and Mill Grove rural schools and the Lincoln Elementary system and since retirement has kept busy with music activities and various other community interests. She received the Logan County "Citizen of the Year" award in 1978 in recognition of her civic involvements. Carl and Allen share a mutual interest in raising purebred Angus cattle. Floods, drought, hail and a tornado have all touched their lives. All the children are musical and have shared their talent with church choirs, bands and other musical activities. Allen played trumpet in the University of Illinois marching band and was lucky enough to go to the Rose Bowl. Aileen played saxophone with the Millikin marching band. Jean also played saxophone. They enjoyed many years in 4-H and achieved high honors for their participation. In retrospect, the Carl Bock family has shared a busy, happy life in Logan County.
