Stephenson, Jr., - Historian, Bock Family Association Elkhart Sesquicentennial 1855 – 2005 p. 112-113 Bock Abraham Bock was born in Rhein Preussen, Germany in 1832. When he was 19 he came to the US and settled in Waverly, Ohio where he married Julianna Mohr in 1858. They left Waverly in 1862 with their two young sons, Fred and Louis and traveled by wagon with their milk cow in tow to settle about 3 miles south of Elkhart on what was known as Mount Fulcher. There, four more children were born, William Henry, George, Elizabeth Marie, and Ella. Abraham died at age 83 and Juliana at 52 and they are buried in the Elkhart Cemetery. Wayne’s dad, Everett, used to tell how his grandfather crossed the fields east of his house to reach the Gillett farm to feed John D. Gillett’s cattle. He also said that the lane to the house where we lived, and on the east, was part of the Edwards Trace. There is no proof of this but there were some deep ruts that could have been made by wagons. Abraham and Julianna’s grown children settled close by, Fred in Williamsville, Louis to Middletown, and William to the Greenview area. Those who remained close to the village were George, Elizabeth and Ella. George who wed Anna M. Steinhauer in 1893 farmed for his father. They had 5 children, Everett M., George W., Gerald F., Julia Margaret and Edwin W. who died at age 4. Anna stayed on the farm and raised her four young children after George died at age 37. She then moved to the Dr. Taylor house on the corner of Governor Oglesby and Gillett in the 1920’s. They say the hobos had her house “marked” as they knew she would give them a meal when they knocked on her door. Everett M. wed Louise Gluick and their children were Dr. Harold L. Everett Wayne and Julia Marie (Durst). Everett Wayne wed Billie Haynes and their children are Rebecca Boline, Roger Wayne, and Gerald Edwin. Roger is the fifth generation Bock to till the soil of his great-great Grandfather’s Centennial farm. Roger wed Lynne Moore Haven and their children are Traver Haven, Emmalie Haven and Wilson Wayne Bock. George W. wed Marian Ozee and lived in Mattoon where he was a successful businessman. He patented and manufactured ear-tags for cattle and also owned the Monarca Oil Companies , one of which was located in Elkhart. (Wayne could recall when he was young working there, pumping gas for 10 gallons for a dollar!) George and Marina had twin daughters, Jacquelyn and Marilyn. Gerald F. (Bud) wed Faye Van Devender and farmed briefly before moving to Leroy where he operated the Food Locker. Gerald served in the army in WW I and is listed on the Doughboy plaque. Julia Margaret wed Gerald Harwood and will be remembered as one of the first teachers at ECHS in the 1920’s where she taught Science, Speech and directed the plays. After 15 or more years she gave up teaching to travel the world and record her travels to 85 countries on motion colored film. She was famous for her travelogues and colorful costumes brought from the different countries. She was also instrumental in producing the pageant for the Elkhart Centennial. Of the Bock family, Roger lives south of town and Billie lives in the village. Elizabeth wed William Fulcher in 1896 (see Fulcher family) and Ella wed Walter Gallion in 1903. They lived in the house that her father built for them which still stands today across from the Grade School. Walter operated a blacksmith shop that was located north of the main street on “Railroad Street”. They had one son, Bernard.
