The figures, 1, 2, 3 and 4, relate to the estimated financial standing, as follows: 1 is used to denote the ownership of real estate over $5,000 in value; 2 is used to denote the value of real estate between $1,000 and $5,000; 3 is used to denote the ownership of real estate of less than $1,000 in value; 4 is used when the person or firm is not known to own real estate. NOTE 2. N. S. and W., after the section, are used to denote the location in the town where they occur, thus: N. refers to town 22 north, which occurs in Prairie Creek, Orvil, and Eminence. S. refers to town 17 north, which occurs in Elkhart and Mt. Pulaski, and in the south part of West Lincoln, town 19 north. W. refers to range 3 west, and occurs in sections 12, 13, 24 and 25, on the west side of Chester. NOTE 3. The postoffice address of each person is the last word in the line, and when they reside in the city or village where the postoffice is located, no other name is used to designate their residence. And when the town and postoffice have the same name, it is used but once, as the number of the section designates the locality in the town. Extracted from: LOGAN COUNTY DIRECTORY.
