Stephenson, Jr., - Historian, Bock Family Association On file in the Lincoln Public Library Lincoln Evening Courier, Lincoln, Illinois Friday November 29, 1929 pg 1 col 8 Mrs. Elizabeth Apel Called by Death The death of Mrs. Elizabeth Apel occurred at 1:10 o'clock this afternoon at the home at 615 North McLean street, following an illness extending over the past three years. In recent weeks, Mrs. Apel's health had been failing rapidly and during the last few days her death was momentarily expected. Mrs. Apel was the widow of the late George Apel, a pioneer of Logan county. She was born in Germany, February 4, 1853, and next February would have observed her seventy-seventh birthday. When 21 years of age she came to this country and on March 13, 1875, was married in Springfield. Mrs. Apel was Elizabeth Bock prior to her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Apel spent most of their married life on Logan county farms, except for a few years spent near Williamsville, their first home. From Williamsville they moved to a farm near Lawndale and from there to the George Corwine farm south of Lincoln where they resided 27 years. While there Mr. Apel purchased and moved onto a farm near Atlanta where the family was residing at the time of his death 13 years ago. A son, Albert Apel, now farms the home place. Mrs. Apel was the mother of nine children, the following seven surviving: Mrs. John Warrick, Girard; Mrs. G. L. Read, Elkhart; Charles, George, Mrs. Charles Shafer and Miss Lillie Apel of Lincoln and Albert Apel of Atlanta. She also leaves one brother, Adam Bock of Lincoln and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Laun of Greenview, and Mrs. Henry Wilmert of Atlanta. Ten grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren are among the surviving relatives. Mrs. Apel was a member of St. John's church and the Ladies Aid Society. She was an active member of the church and society, attending all services when her health would permit. The funeral will take place Monday afternoon from St. John's church. The hour of the funeral will be announced later. Rev. J. A. Hoefer will have charge and burial will be made in the family lot in Union cemetery. Mrs. Warrick of Girard, today received word of her mother's death. Yesterday her daughter, Mrs Adolph Schoen and family of St. Louis were in a serious automobile accident while en route to Girard to spend Thanksgiving. Five members of the family were taken to a hospital at Carlinville. Mrs Schoen and nine-year-old son remaining, the former suffering with a broken arm and injured jaw, and the child has a fractured leg. This week the Warrick home was almost totally destroyed by fire shortly after Mrs. Warrick had returned home after visiting her with her husband. ----- Funerals Mrs. Elizabeth Apel Funeral services for the late Mrs. Elizabeth Apel were conducted from the home at 1 o'clock this afternoon and from St. John's church at 1:30 o'clock. Rev J. A. Hoefer was in charge and burial was in Union Cemetery. Mrs. Grace Gehlbach and Vincent Jones, accompanied by Caroline Lauer, sang "Asleep in Jesus," "Rock of Ages" and "In the Garden."
