Cavett – At the residence of her husband, J. A. Cavett, near this city, February 10th at six o’clock – Mrs. Mary M. Cavett, aged 31 years, 11 months, 19 days. The funeral took place from the residence on Saturday, Dr. A. J. McGlumphy officiating, assisted by Rev. J. M. Hubbert, and the body was laid to rest in Union Cemetery. Mrs. Cavett was the eldest child of Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Roach. Her parents, husband and infant child, her sister, Lou and brother, S. B. Roach, with many relatives and a wide circle of friends are bereft by her death. She was born at Sweetwater, Menard county, February 21st, 1850, but for the past seventeen years has resided in this county. She was for a number of years a student at Lincoln University, under the tuition of Dr. McGlumphy, and he it was who said the sacred words that united her to life to her husband, March 17th, 1875, and his also was the mournful office to perform the last rites over her lifeless clay. And yet, the office was not one of crushing sadness, for at the early age of ten years she had made a start in the Christian life which she lived consistently to its close, always being a tireless and effective worker in the Master’s vineyard and few deaths have been more triumphant. To the last she was in possession of all her faculties and gave direction for the rearing and education of her infant child, with the most inspiring and fervent testimony as to the realities of the hope that sustained her through the ordeal of death, and convincing exhortations to those about her. It was one of those impressive instances of the triumphant passage of a Christian over the River of Death which takes away the sting of death and robs grief of its poignancy in the realization of the fact that she is only gone before and is not a great way separated from those she loved in life. Her babe, which was born the 2nd inst, in a very strong, healthy and thriving child, her only one. She was injured severely a few years ago by the falling of the amphitheater at the fair grounds and had never fully recovered from the hurt, so that she was not able to bear up under the burden of maternity.
