Stephenson, Jr., - Historian, Bock Family Association On file Lincoln Public Library The Lincoln Evening Courier, Lincoln, Illinois Thursday 18 July 1946 pg 1 col 4 Charles Lauer Dies in City Charles Lauer, 74, one of Lincoln's most respected business men, a member of the firm of Lauer Brothers and vice president of the First national Bank in Lincoln, died at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday at deaconess hospital. He had been in failing health for several years. Born in Germany he came to the United States with his parents at the age of 9 years, spent nearly half of his lifetime on a farm, then entered the hardware business and became one of the most influential business men in the community. Mr. Lauer at the time of his death was president emeritus of the board of directors of the Deaconess hospital. He had served 21 years as member of the board, six years as president, and retired from the position at the last annual meeting of the Deaconess Society when he was commended for his long and faithful years of work. He was a large contributor to the new hospital building fund. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical church; the Men's Bible class and the Church brotherhood. In Grain Company Mr. Lauer has been vice president of the First National bank since its organization in April 1934. He was also president of the West Lincoln Farmer's Grain Co. In 1912, Charles and Louis Lauer purchased the Reinhardt Hardware and Implement Co. on South Sangamon st. and the former was active in its management until ill health prevented him from working. He was born Nov. 11, 1871 at Rhenish, Bavaria, Germany, a son of Peter and Phillipina Appel Lauer who brought their family to this country when Charles was nine. His marriage to Miss Mary C. Gosda took place Feb. 7, 1907 in Lincoln. They resided many years at 332 Eighth st. The Survivors Surviving are his wife, five daughters and three sons: Mrs. Florence Wilmert, Mrs. Marie Brooker, Dorothy Lauer, Louis C. Lauer, Carl G. Lauer, Lincoln; Caroline Lauer. Clifton Lauer, Arizona; Mrs. Alma Powers, Elgin, and the Rev. Walter Lauer, Downers Grove, Ill. One brother Louis Lauer of Lincoln, and a half-brother, Jacob Lauer, sr., of Broadwell, also survive. There are eight grandchildren. The body was taken to Sheets Funeral home and Thursday afternoon removed to the family residence. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the residence and at 2:30 o'clock at St. John's Lutheran church with the Rev. John Schultz officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
