Sparkman, Jr. Transcription by William, L. Stephenson, Jr. August 24, 2007 Lincoln Courier Lincoln, Illinois Monday, August 17, 1981 A former Lincoln woman and her husband died Sunday evening following a one-vehicle accident in Champaign County. Donna K. Steffens Sparkman, 38, and George R. Sparkman, Jr., 37, of Bement were traveling in a pickup truck on Philo Road just north of Tolono, when the truck apparently went out of control and left the roadway. Witnesses saw a cloud of smoke come from the truck before it left the roadway, according to the Champaign County coroner’s office. Sparkman was pronounced dead at the scene about 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Sparkman was taken to Burnham City Hospital, Champaign, where she died shortly thereafter. Funeral services for the couple will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Lincoln, with the Rev. Don Beckman and the Rev. Larry Clemetsen officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home and hour before the service Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Sparkman Family Trust Fund. Mrs. Sparkman was born Oct. 28, 1942, in Lincoln, the daughter of Clarence and Mildred Brautigam Steffens. She was preceded in death by her mother and one sister. Sparkman was born Nov. 1, 1943, in Florida, the son of George and Margaret Weisner Sparkman. He was preceded in death by one brother. The couple were married Feb. 16, 1966 at Gainesville, Fla. Sparkman had served in the U.S. Navy and was employed as a CILCO service representative in the Bement area. He was a member of the Lutheran church and the Masonic Lodge. Mrs. Sparkman was a hair dresser for Lincolnshire Hair designs and was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Montcello. The Pantagraph, Tuesday, August 18, 1981 George R. Sparkman and Donna K. Steffens The couple are survived by four daughters, Kelly, Holly, Tonya, and Tracy, all at home; Mrs. Sparksman’s father and stepmother. Clarence and Vera Steffens, Lincoln; her brother, Larry Steffens, Lincoln; Sparkman’s father in Florida; his mother, Margaret Morrato, also in Florida; his sister, Nancy Parrot, Orlando, Fla.; and his brother, Michael Sparkman, Gainesville, Fla. Mrs. Sparkman was a hairdresser in Lincolnshire Hair Designs, Champaign. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, Montcello. Mr. Sparkman was a Central Illinois Light Co. service representative in the Bement area. He was a member of the Lutheran Church and Masonic Lodge and was a Navy Veteran. Memorials may be made to the Sparkman Family Trust Fund. Funeral services for George R. and Donna K. Sparkman were conducted by the Revs. Don Beckman and Larry Clemetsen at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Joelyn Kelly served as organist. Pallbearers were Michael Gallivan, Tom Cutright, Bob Buckner, Cliff Sermager, Bill Sparks, Richard Miller, Ron Berg, Gary Berg, Gene Rohlfs, Dan Comstock, John Comstock, Galen Hullinger, and Robert Cooper. Burial was at Zion Cemetery, with Holland and Barry Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
