There is evidence of about 60 graves in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Unfortunately, about 10 are identified only by a grave marker and an additional 12-15 are broken or otherwise unreadable due to weathering. There appears to be a large number of infants and children buried here. My assumption is that there are many more graves here that are simply unmarked or the headstone has disappeared. The first burial appears to be that of Josiah Abbot in 1840, with the last two burials being in 1932 and 1970. Sections in this cemetery seem largely composed of family plots. Many of the dates, ages of individuals and in some cases, names, are a “best guess” based on the state of the headstone. Any item that is largely uncertain will appear in “quotation marks”. The information below is based on personal transcribing as well as the official list that was obtained from the cemetery association. The cemetery, despite its age and the condition of some of the headstones, is fairly well maintained. It is fenced, but accessible and the grass appears to be mowed regularly. The majority of the headstones and markers in this cemetery are marble (unless otherwise noted), with most already at or past their point of readability, but yet still somewhat identifiable.
