Davis, who has been quite ill for a number of months, died last night at his home in Decatur, aged 61 years. The funeral will be held at Long Creek on Sunday afternoon. Mr. Davis was born in Macon county, November 2, 1835. His father, Joseph Davis, was a stock dealer and came to Illinois in 1828 from Kentucky and settled in Macon county in 1829. The father was s soldier in the Black Hawk war and died in Mt. Zion township, in 1877, at the age of 84 years. The mother who was also a Kentuckian died at the age of 72. The family numberd seven sons and six daughters, seven of whom died in early childhood. Those who grew to mature years are: Matilda, wife of Clayton Jones of Mt. Zion Lydia, wife of John S. Kizer of this city John who married Miss Martha Powell, and who became a member of congress in 1890 from Kansas Mary, deceased, who was the wife of Abel Camp of Long Creek Louisa, also deceased Henry whose death the Republican records today Henry davis attended the district schools in Macon county when a boy, and afterward became a student in the Illinois college at Jacksonville. After completing his college course he engaged in farming during the summer season, teaching school in the winter. He subsequently engaged in the nursery business in connection with farming, devoting his time and attention to that work for eighteen years. He was very successful in this enterprise and had a profitable trade. In 1881 he came to Decatur and opened a food and livery stable which he sold out after conducting it two years. He then carried on a stable in the south part of the city for two years after which he engaged in the hotel business, conducting a livery stable in connection with it. After two and a half years he went to Shelbyville where he carried on a livery stable for four years at the expiration of which time he again settled in Decatur and leased the Brown auditorium barn on East Prairie street which he conducted for a time subsequently engaging in the same business on North Water street continuing until the time of his death. Henry Davis married Miss Martha Stickle of Long Creek township and to them were born five children, Ivan M., Rowena, Ruby M., Byrd L, Minnie S. and Charles R. He showed his loyalty to his country during the war by enlisting in the three months service in Company A., Eighth Illinois Infantry. He was an uncompromising Republican, believing in the principles and policies of that party. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
