Shaw Assisted By Dr. Dowling, At Rites for George Russell A beautiful tribute was paid to George Russell at his funeral services yesterday at the Richardson Funeral Home by Dr. F. M. Dowling of Fullerton, who gave great assistance to Mr. Russell at time of founding of the First Christian church in Ontario. Dr. Dowling spoke of Mr. Russell as a man of rugged integrity and honesty, and a man with a great capacity for friendship. Dr. Dowling assisted Rev. Shirley R. Shaw, pastor of the Christian church, in conducting services for Mr. Russell, one of Ontario's pioneers. Death came to Mr. Russell Tuesday [1 Mar] at the age of 86 years, four months and 26 days. Third Of Ten Children He was the son of William Henry and Nancy McCartney Russell, third of ten children, born near Springmill, Richland county, Ohio, October 3, 1845. He lived in Ohio until after the Civil War period, when the family removed to a place near Decatur, Ill., where Mr. Russell lived about 20 years. He was married to Alice Young, daughter of James and Lydia Ann Young of Kenton, Ohio, December 14, 1882, to which union three children were born, of whom one son, Solon Young Russell, survives. They removed to Ontario, California, in November 1890. At that time there were about 700 inhabitants here. For 27 years they lived here, taking active part in the business, civic and church life of the city. One Of First Homes Mr and Mrs. Russell for years occupied the large white house on the north side of A street between Fern and Vine avenues, which was erected by the late W. B. Chaffey, one of the founders of Ontario, and said to be the first substantial dwelling to be built in the community. During his life here, Mr. Russell was actively engaged in citrus ranching and was affiliated in the real estate and insurance business with the late Burton Tuttle, William H. Lindley and H. E. Swan. Active In Affairs He was also prominately identified with the Golden State Canning company and was active in many affairs looking to the welfare and upbuilding of the community. He was a long time member and active supporter of the First Christian church. Mr. Russell and his wife removed to Kenton, Ohio, in the spring of 1918, where Mrs. Russell died in August 1922. After that he resided there with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs. Solon Young Russell, until the fall of 1927, when they removed to Ontario and he made his home with Mrs. Mary J. Flavelle, a cousin.
