HARPSTRITE, OLD RESIDENT, IS DEAD For Many years Grocer, He Acquired Much Porperty Augustus Harpstrite, one of the old residents and wealthy men of Decatur, died at his home, Prairie and Broadway, about 10 o'clock this morning. He had been ill for some time. Mr. Harpstrite had lived in Decatur since 1858, thought he came to Macon county in 1855. Mr. Harpstrite owned a large amount of property on Eldorado and Cerro Gpordo streets and at other placed imn the city. He also owend the building occupied by P. M. Meridith. NATIVE OF GERMANY Mr. Harpstrie was a native of Germany, his birhtplace being Baden. He was born March 4, 1830. At the age of three years he was brought to his country by his parents, John B. and Mary Harpstrite. The family lived for a time in the East and then came to Delphi, Ind., where they lived six years. In 1844 they removed to Illinois and settled in Clinton county. The son, Augustus, spent his early life on a farm and was educated in the public schools. In 1855 he came to Macon county and settle on a farm near Albion in South Wheatland township. Two years later he went to Chicago, then to St. Louis and then to Belleville, Ill, where he was employed as a farm hand at $8 a month. After five months of farm work near Belleville Mr. Harpstrite went to Michigan, but in the same year, 1858, came to Decatur. STARTED GROCERY STORE He had been able to save a small sum from his earnings and when he came here he gegan business for himself as a grocer. He continued in this enterprise until 1888. For many years before his death he lived a retired life. He invested in real estate from time to time and now ownes a large amount of farm land and city property. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Harpstrite, two brothers Edward and Charles, six sons and three daughters. The funeral will be held Thursday.
