Seth Thomas Hodges Birth: 26 October 1788, Alabama Death: 18 June 1841, Macoupin, Illinois Buried: Oak Hill Cemetery, South Palmyra, Illinois or Hodges Cemetery, South Palmyra, Illinois --Seth served in the Mississippi Territory Militia from 22 September 1813 to December 1813 and the West Tennessee. Militia from 28 Jan 1814-May 10 1814. Was in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend Tohopeka, March, 1814 under commander Gen. Andrew Jackson. "1812 Seth Hodges of Lincoln Co., Tennessee, appoints Thomas Delanoy to represent him in suit for his share of Robert Thrasher's estate, in right of his wife Elizabeth, now dec'd. John Bryan and Joel Yowell, administrators. (Elizabeth, wife of Seth Hodges, deeded part of this land away.) The rest of the heirs are Sary, represented by James Blair Gorden or Garden, Joseph and Thomas Thrasher." The petition was made in Franklin Co. Ga. pg 254. Order to advertise for sale 210 acres of the original grant to Robert Thrasher, signed by Robert Joseph and Thomas Thrasher, Thomas Deloney, Seth Hodges, James Blair for Sally Thrasher, in Lincoln Co. Seth's is listed in a Power of Attorney in settling Elizabeth's his first wife's father's estate in Georgia. Franklin Co GA Deed Book TTT 1812-1814 pg 59 --Typed obituary of his daughter Elizabeth Jane, in a Carlinville, Illinois news-paper 6 Aug 1915, tells of Seth T. coming from Tennessee with John Love. Says he enter the county in 1813. [ Front Plate] --He is in the 1818 Census of Green County since which was before it was Macoupin Co. Source Macoupin County Deed Book. --Seth purchased land 23 December 1823 in South Palmyra Twp Record ID 185884 page 12, from the Federal Government. A second purchase is recorded 1885 pg 28 , in Carlinville Twp 3 April 1829. A third purchase in Carlinville recorded 199331 page 109 29 May 1833. Doesn't name her parents. --Macoupin County Inquirer 10 Aug 1915, Obituary of his daughter Elizabeth Jane' death. Names Seth T. Hodges and Mary Abigail Jefferson. --Carlinville Democrat 11 Aug 1915, Obituary of his daughter Elizabeth Jane, says she was the first white girl baby born in the township. Names her parents Seth T. Seth Hodges d. 18 July 1841, Married 1st Elizabeth Thrasher d. abt 1813, married 2nd a Jefferson; Seth was one of the first white men to settle in present Macoupin County, Ilinois; his daughter Mary Hodges married Beden Davis 26 June 1829 in Macoupin County, Illinois ; Mary and Beden had Seth Davis (my ancestor) b. 4 March, 1832 in Macoupin County, Illinois; married. Rachel Ann Gorby in Iowa. Beden and Mary moved to Iowa in 1836. Seth Hodges may be the son of Joseph Hodges, a Revolutionary War soldier." Not proven. -- On 28 September 1815 Seth received a Tennessee General Land Grant #7790 for 20 acres in Lincoln County Tennessee... this land was located in the 2nd District on the waters of Norris Creek a north branch of the Elk River. (Need document for proof. Please mail it to me.) --In the summer of 1814 Seth traveled to Illinois Territory with John Love. They were the first white men in the area. Summer of 1815 he and John returned to Illinois planted crops hunted and fished and laid crops before returning to Tennessee. In spring of 1816 brought his family to Macoupin County, Illinois ; Source Macoupin County, Illinois History. --In 1829 Macoupin Co. was formed from Green and Madison Counties. Seth was appointed to a 5 member commission to select a site for the county Seat. Source Macoupin County, Illinois; History 1879. --1 June 1829 donated 15 acres of land with 15 acres of land from Ezekial Good for the County seat of Carlinville Source Deed Book 13 April 1829. -- He was elected as one of the first county commissioners of Macoupin Co. 7 September 1829 Seth received a contract to build the first county courthouse a 18x24 two story log house for which he received $150 in 3 payments. 20 Mar 1833 purchased 40 Acres at $1.25 an acre. --Death: 1841 fell in a well. Palmer per Court Document dated 2 July 1841. Says he died about the 18th of June 1841. --The History of Macoupin County, Illinois 1879. Page 17, "In September 1827, John Burleson, ... and half brother of Seth T.Hodges, with his mother's family came to the county, the home of Mr. Hodges, ... pg 162 Brushy Mound Township. "About the year 1828, Theodorus Davis, Junior,... having recently married the daughter of Joseph Hodges, of Hodge's, Creek. pg 221 South Palmyra Township "The first settler in the township were SET´H HODGES and JOHN LOVE. Hodges come from Tennessee and settled in this township, near the south line on a stream, now call Hodges Creek, deriving its name from that family. JOHN LOVE and family settled near MR. HODGES. .... William Hodges ( a relative of SETH HODGES), a local preacher came in the year 1829. [ Who is this William Hodges? Send me the information. REV. JOHN HOWERTON, a member of the Baptist Denomination arrived about 1830; he was a native of Tennessee... The first land entries were made by SETH HODGES on the E.S.W. quarter section 28, December 23, 1823. he lived in the township some years before as a squatter. Mary Polly Matthews, widow of George Matthews. --Two possible other children. *Thomas Hodges (1821) NARA 432-18 1850 Macoupin Co Illinois Census pg 38 Sheet #214 H/H 5-5 age 29 listed with his wife Sarah and children. *Seth Hodges (1823) is in the same census in this house hold age 27. He married Mary Rainey on 3 March 1850. I believe them to be Seth sons, but don' t know who their mother is. Elizabeth Thrasher is thought to have died about 1813. The first recorded child of Mary Abigail is Elizabeth Jane 1828. Mary Abigail may have been born about 1809 thus making her 19 years old when she had her first child. It seems logical that Seth had a wife between Elizabeth Thrasher and Mary Abigail, unless Elizabeth died after 1823. Tells of interment that day in Etter Cemetery. --Typed obituary of her death in a Carlinville, Illinois newspaper 6 Aug 1915, tells of Seth T. coming from Tennessee. with John Love.
