History: Sawyerville, Mt Olive Twp - 1 Jan 1998 - Macoupin County Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Project Archives ©1998 Gloria Frazier History of Sawyerville Sawyerville is located northwest of White City on Routes 138 and 4. It is located in Section 6 of Mt Olive Township. The post office was established 17 Sep 1906, disbanded 15 Jan 1910, reestablished 6 Sep 1910, disbanded 15 Dec 1914, and reestablished 21 Jun 1916. The Village of Sawyerville was founded in 1905, a year after the Superior Coal Company sunk a mine known as Superior Coal #2 on the east edge of the village limits. Sawyerville was named after Thomas Sawyer who sold the land to Superior Coal. The village of Sawyerville was incorporated 12 Jun 1907. In the 1930’s, Superior Coal #2 was operating with about 500 employees and the population of Sawyerville was about 400-500 citizens. There were four general stores in the village at the time.
