Born March 6, 1926, in Medora, IL to Truman D. and Ruby (Owens) Bowker, Gene was married to Betty J. Smith in Medora on June 27, 1947. Gene was a U.S. Navy veteran and served on the USS Yorktown during World War II. He was a straw buyer for the Alton Box Board and also a member of Alton VFW Post 1308 and a Mason with Piasa Lodge 27. In addition to his wife, Betty, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and John Curry of Eagerville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Dwight Bowker of Godfrey, Steve and Glenda Bowker of Edwardsville; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lela Harding and Anna Mae Bowker, both of Medora, and Doris Pruitt of Carlinville; and one brother, Bill Bowker of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Viola Kirchner and Ida Coleman; six brothers, Walter, Lloyd, Milford, Jim, Claude and Elmer Bowker. Visitation will be 5 p.m. To 8 p.m. Friday at Targhetta Funeral Home in Medora, IL. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Baggett officiating. Burial will be at Medora Cemetery with full military honors by Alton VFW 1308 Ritual Team. Memorials may be given to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Medora.
