The interment was held at the Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth, Va., with full military honors. A memorial service in honor of Elmer (Tug) Bowker was held Sunday, March 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Medora with Rev. Loren File officiating. Fifty-two members of his family attended along with many friends. Elmer (Tug) is the son of the late Truman D. Bowker and Ruby Owens Bowker of Medora. He graduated in the year 1936 from Medora High School. He enlisted in the United States Navy and left for service Feb. 14, 1937. He served thirty years with the Navy, twenty six continuous years without mission a day of service, he received many honors during his career both on land and at sea. Among them were four bronze stars. He retired in the year 1967 as Chief Medical Warrant Officer. His wife, Polly Whitaker Bowker whom he married Oct. 7, 1939 will remain in West Chesapeake, Va. with their daughter. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, one son, five grandchildren, six brothers and five sisters. One brother, Walter and his father preceded him in death.
