Cope, 81, died at 7:10 p.m. Monday, Feb. 21, 2005, at Carlinville Area Hospital. He was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Alton to James William and Norabell (Green) Cope. He and his wife, the former Hilda Shoptaugh, were married on Jan. 30, 1947, in Alton and celerated their 58th wedding anniversary this year. A tractor driver at Olin Corp. in East Alton for 42 years, he retired in 1986. The World War II Army Air Corps veteran served in England and had 50 missions in B-17s. He received the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a lifetime member of the Machinist Union and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Susan Wahle of Hurley, N.M.; two sons and their wifes, Carl Richard and Miriam Rhoads of Rosemond, Calif., and Dan and Teresa Cope of Bunker Hill; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister and her husband, Jane and Tom Johnson of Canton, Mo.; and a brother and his wife, Charles and Esther Cope of East Alton. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and six brothers. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Woodburn Congregational Church, with the rev. LeRoy Fahnestock officiating. Burial will be at Woodburn Congregational Church. Landers Funeral Home of Bunker Hill is in charge of arrangements.
