Obituary of William R EDDINGTON, Macoupin Co Illinois 19 Sep 1998 Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives ©1998 Mark Strohbeck Name of Deceased: EDDINGTON, William R. Name of Newspaper: Bunker Hill Gazette-News Date of Obituary: Jan 1936 Obituary: FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR W. EDDINGTON ---------- Wrote Interesting History of Civil War Days at 92 ---------- W. R. EDDINGTON, 93, Civil war veteran of Brighton, Ill., whose death was published in our last issue was buried Sunday afternoon at the cemetery in Woodburn. Funeral services were held at the Eddington home and at Woodburn Congregational church at 1:30 p. m. Rev. Henry Cramer officiating. Both Brighton and Bunker Hill American Legion posts participated in the military burial rites. Eddington was born April 2, 1842, near Woodburn in Bunker Hill township, but before he was two years old his parents moved into the adjacent Bunker Hill township. On his marriage to Eliza MILLER of Brighton township after the Civil War, he located on the farm where he died, and took part in the building of the home in which he was to pass the rest of his life, even to making of the bricks. His home was shared with his son, Harvey, who has handled the farm in his father's late years of life, and another son, Hiram, residing on a nearby farm, the homestead place where the old soldier's early years were passed. His third son Norman, and a daughter, Mrs. T. L. STROHBECK are residents of the same nieghborhood. Mrs. EDDINGTON died a number of years ago. Surviving in addition to the children of the old soldier are 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. W. C. JACOBY of this city is a brother-in-law, their wives having been sisters. Mr. Eddington when he was 92 years old wrote a very interesting history of his life and up until his recent illness kept busy typing these and mailed out to his friends two each day. Since there are so very few Civil war veterans left, perhaps not more than two in Macoupin County, one of which is Mr. John SLAUGHTER of Gillespie we feel that this history of his life would interest our readers and we will, starting next week print it in the Gazette-News.
