The shaft is 322 feet deep, and is equipped with self-dumping cages. He was being hoisted, with several others, when, at about sixty-five feet from the surface, he fell from the cage to the bottom of the shaft. At the surface, 1 1/3 inches of vertical play was observed at the end of the platform of the cage from which he fell.
