Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
David Evans, aged 22 years, single, occupation miner, was killed at 4 p. m., 
September 11, 1895, at Mine No. 1 of the Chicago-Virden Coal Company, Virden, 
Macoupin county. The shaft is 322 feet deep, and is equipped with self-dumping 
cages. He was being hoisted, with several others, when, at about sixty-five feet 
from the surface, he fell from the cage to the bottom of the shaft. At the 
surface, 1 1/3 inches of vertical play was observed at the end of the platform of 
the cage from which he fell.
