Fifteenth Annual Report of the State Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1896
James O’Neil, aged 51 years, widower, left five children, three of whom are 
dependent, occupation miner, was killed at 5:20 p. m., January 8, 1896, at the 
mine of the Green Ridge Coal Company, Girard, Macoupin county. O’Neil and his 
partner were about to light two shots in the room at the same time; O’Neil put his 
lamp to the squib and remarked that it would not light; he again put his lamp to 
the squib, when the shot immediately exploded.
