He was born Monday, Oct. 24, 1932, in Kane, IL and was the son of Virgil L. and Opal Abigail (Huff) Pruitt, Sr. On October 25, 1952, he married Doris Marie Bowker in Pocahontas, AR. Virgil served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany and France 1953-1955. He returned to his place of employment at Owens-Illinois Glass in Alton, where he worked 32 years before retiring. He was a driver for Langley's and later Don and Rob Bailey, until his stroke in 1993. He enjoyed making pancakes for his grandkids, camping and fishing in the Ozarks, cookouts with his kids and grandkids, and listening to gospel and country music. He loved the Lord and his church family, and has missed being with them in recent years. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Doris, five sons, Dan Pruitt (Beth) of Carlinville, Doug Pruitt Pruitt of Indiana, Greg Pruitt of Charleston, MO., Steve Pruitt (and his companion, Cindy) of Nilwood, and Don Pruitt of Greenfield; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and a foster brother, Harold Frank He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Eads; twin infant brothers; and a granddaughter, Crystal Nicole "Niki" Pruitt. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Medora. Brother Carl Berry and Brother George Wooden will officiate the service. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, American Heart Association or Bethlehem Tabernacle Church in Greenfield, IL. Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville is in charge of arrangements.
