Name of Newspaper: Gillespie Area News Date of Obituary: February 19. 1969 Obituary: Gillespie: Ellie Gesine SCHAEFER, daughter of Edward and Kea (Carolyn) SCHOEN CORDUM, was born near Gillespie, July 17, 1883. She was the oldest of nine children, of whom five survive. She was baptized at Zion Evangelical Lutheran church, Gillespie, March 30, 1884 by Pastor FISCHER, and confirmed at the same church in the Lutheran faith by Pastor L. L. KREKELER, March 27, 1902. She received her schooling in the Isaac school, near Gillespie, and only went as far as the fourth grade or so. But she learned to read, interestingly enough, when she helped her grandchildren do their home work. In her teens and early twenties, she worked out in the homes of the Gillespie community. She was married to George SCHAEFER of Moro, Ill., December 21, 1911, at the Evangelical parsonage at Alton. Mr. SCHAEFER preceded her in death October 27, 1935 The young couple lived in the first home built in Moro. Mr. SCHAEFER worked on the railroad in the summers, and at the mines during the winters. Mrs. SCHAEFER lived in Moro until just a few years ago, when she moved to Gillespie to live wither her brother, Chris CORDUM. Then, six months ago, she went to live at the Towerview Nursing Home, Bunker Hill. She passed away there February 15, 1969, at around 1:30 p.m. of a heart attack. She attained the age of 85 years, six months, and 28 days. She is survived by four children: Henry SCHAEFER, Fosterburg, Mrs. Ralph (Hermina) BRUEGGEMAN, Shipman; Mrs. Joseph (Luella) JOHNSON, Bunker Hill; Mrs. Robert (Marie) COOPER, Moro, 17 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. Also three brothers, Chris CORDUM, Gillespie, Henry, Carlinville, and Edward, New Boston, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Grace EGGERS, Plainview, and Mrs. Grace LAWRENCE, Lincoln Park, Mich. Many nephews and nieces. Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at the Jacoby-Wise Funeral Home, Bunker Hill, by Pastor Luther A. MEYER, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gillespie. Pastor Wayne HOXSIE, Moro Presbyterian Church, gave closing prayer and benediction.
