Name of Deceased: SIMPSON, JOHN Name of Newspaper: The White Hall Register Date of Obituary: February 22, 1924 Obituary: Greene County, Illinois The White Hall Register February 22, 1924 JOHN SIMPSON, SR. was born in Yorkshire, England November 5, 1836 and died at home of daughter, Mrs. Best Rose, White Hall, February 19, 1924, age 87 years. His parents were James and Eliza Simpson. His father died when he was quite young and his mother passed away a number of years ago in England. Near the close of the Crimean War, Mr. Simpson joined the 11th Hssars, taking part in the battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, coming to America at the age of 18 or 20. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in Co. G., 59th Reg. of Ill. and served until the close of the war, taking part in many important battles. He was wounded in the right knee at Perryville, Kentucky causing permanent injury, being honorably discharged at close of the war, he returned to Carrollton and was married to Sara Fish of that place October 17, 1865. Ten children born, M/Mrs Simpson had lived together 57 years at the time of Mrs. Simpson's death last year. Services held at Rose home, burial in Carrollton Cemetery.
