Kirby Born about 1835 Died About May 2, 1862 POW in Alton, IL Confederate Soldier Taken from May 2, 1862 "Columbia Missouri Statesman" Death at Alton. John M. Roberts Jr., son of Dr. William R. Roberts, of Rocheport, died in Alton, Ill whilst under arrest as a prisoner of war. His disease was consumption. Mr. Roberts was a young gentleman with a finely developed intellect, and possessed many noble traits of character, and in the social circle had won many friends. His untimely death will be regretted by a score of friends and acquaintences. His remains were brought to Rocheport by his father and interred at Walnut Grove Cemetery. Errors were made with the M being W in the younger John and then the Dr. was John William instead of William R. That’s what I see and what makes sense to me, according to the cemetery stone of Dr. Roberts and in the census reports. Dr. Roberts was married to Janetta S. Kirby. A daughter, Nannie was married to Wm. A. Bradford. Wm. Bradford’s parents are buried in Walnut Grove Cemetery. Mary Helen Allen
