She was born Feb. 12, 1900, in Alton, a daughter of the late Malcolm and Amelia Powell. She worked in the pension department of Olin Corp. before entering the Army during World War II, where she served from 1943 to 1945 in New Guinea and Australia and also served with WAC. While in the service she received three Bronze Stars for the Asian Pacific Theater and a Bronze Star for the Philippines Liberation. Her husband, Otto Gnerich preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister, Malinda Powell of Edwardsville; nieces and nephews Ronald Powell, Carol Middleton, Joan Robledo, Linda Garrett, Marie Powell-Hombs; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Visitation will be from 11:30 until time of service at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens Chapel in Bethalto, with Rev. Betty Coffey officiating. Military rites will be performed by East Alton American Legion Post 794. Marks Mortuary in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
