The funeral took place Thursday, the reamins being laid to rest in Nameoki cemetary. March 4th Louise, the six year old daughter of Pete Shanks, died Sunday night after a short illness with pneumonia. She was buried Tuesday morning, the funeral taking place from the family residence. (Venice) Walter Oberst, of the Bend, died Sunday morning at 7:30 o'clock, after a lingering illness. He was a member of the Venice Fire Department and a highly respected young man. The remains were buried Tuesday at the German Lutheran cemetery in Nameoki. The funeral was under the auspices of the fire department. Frank Stillwell Succumbs After Prolonged Illness Frank Stillwell, superintendent of the Madison county county farm, died last night at 9:45 o'clock. He was suffering with cancer of the stomach. Last August he had typhoid fever and has been weak since falling gradually. The past two weeks he was confined to bed and his condition became more serious until death ensued. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, from the family residence, where services will be conducted by Rev. J H Nickerson, pastor of St Johns church. The Odd Fellows will take charge of the burial. The body will be interred at Woodlawn. The pall bearers will be Alonzo Keller, B H Richards, Chas. Pauly, Geo. Mahler, S O Bonner and John T. Crocker. Frank Stillwell was in his 60th year of his age, having been born at New Castle, Delaware July 17, 1835. Early in life he learned bricklaying and was engaged in that business until he took charge of the county farm. He came west 33 years ago and located in St. Louis where he met Ben H. Richards, and in August 1864, he came with him to Edwardsville and formed a copartnership. Their first contract was a brick residence for Geo B Burnett, now owned and occupied by W P Bradshaw. They remained together for a period upwards of twenty years. In December 1865, he was married to Miss Margaret File in St. Louis. The union was blessed with five children, all of whom, also his wife, survive. the children are J. F. manager of the N O Nelson plant; B F who is in the mercantile business, and Misses George, Elba and Prestina, the former being a teacher in the public schools. He also leaves a brother John, who resides at Chester Penn., and a sister, Mrs. Chandler Evans of Wilmington, Del. Mr. Stillwell was appointed superintendent of the county farm and took charge a year ago. He gave entire satisfaction to all concerned, and at the February meeting of the county board was reappointed for the present year. His family will carry out the contract and manage the farm until the time expires. Mr. Stillwell lived an industrious life. He was unobtrusive, attended to his own affairs and was generous according to his means. He was just and appreciative of the work of those whom he employed. He was an honorable and good citizen, and his death will carry sadness to all who knew him. Mrs. Kate Sadonis, wife of Peter Sadonis, died last evening at 5:30 o'clock after an illness of six weeks with lung fever, aged 42 years. The funeral will take place to-morrow morning at nine o'clock from St. Marys church, where services will be conducted by Rev. Father C A O'Reilly. The remains will be interred at the catholic cemetery. She leaves her husband and one son aged 8 years to mourn her loss. The family came here in August last from Barclay, Sangamon County, and have been living in the Nic Seip house on Park Street. Mr. Sadonis is employed by the Madison Coal Company. Article Tuesday March 12, 1895 On Sunday occurred the funeral of Martha, the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Sanders. The remains were laid to rest in Alhambra cemetery. March 11th The funeral of Frank Stillwell, superintendent of the county farm, who died Thursday, took place Saturday afternoon. It was largely attended by friends of the family, and the Odd Fellows took part in a body. The services at the residence were conducted by Rev. J H Nickerson, of St. John's. At the grave the ritualistic ceremony of the Odd Fellows was performed. The body was laid to rest in Woodlawn. The casket was covered with flowers, and some of the tributes were of most beautiful design. Among relatives from a distance were: Miss Madge and Ben. Eddie of Affton, MO; Mrs. Lyman Thomas, Mrs. Merritt Marshall, Mrs. Dr. O.E. Smith and Mrs. J. Harrison of Ellindale, MO. Article Dated Friday, March 15, 1895 Death of an Old Resident Mrs. Mary McCune, an old resident of this city (Edwardsville), died Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock, the result of a rupture. The funeral took place from her home on Hillsboro avenue yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. A M Elliot. The body was laid to rest in Woodlawn. Mrs. McCune was 71 years, 8 months, 20 days of age. She was born in county Monehan, Ireland June 23, 1823, and came to this country in 1838, settling in Pennsylvania. She came to Madison County in 1852 and located in Edwardsville and has resided here since. She was united in marriage on Feb. 14 1856 with Benjamin McCune, who died March 16, 1873. She was the mother of four children, two of whom survive, viz: Elizabeth wife of Wm Sparks, and Mary Isabella, wife of Argulus Stubbs. She was a fond mother, a good neighbor and kind friend, loved and respected by all. She was an honored member of the Presbyterian church. She will be sadly missed. Michael Dwyer, who had been suffering from consumption for the past six months, died at a late hour Monday evening. Deceased was an estimable young man of 21 years. The funeral will take place from the Cathedral Thursday morning at 9 o'clock. John Schenk, aged 22 years, died Monday afternoon at his home at Sixth and Walnut Streets, after an illness of several weeks duration of rheumatism, which finally went to his heart. He was an employee of the Glass Works and was well liked by all who knew him. Thos. H. Jones, a life long resident of Alton, died Tuesday morning at 2:30 o'clock. Deceased leaves a wife and four children, also four brothers and a sister. The funeral will take place this afternoon from the residence of his son, W. H. Jones, on Dry Street, to the Salvation Army Hall. Martin Jones, the aged man who broke his hip in falling near the waterworks during the icy spell in the winter, died last Wednesday at St. Joseph's Hospital, from the injuries sustained. Deceased was 76 years of age. Four sons all grown survive him. The funeral took place Friday afternoon from the residence of his son, at the waterworks, to the city cemetery. Rev. Abbott of the Baptist church conducted the services. Died, near Otterville, March 7th in the eleventh year of her age, Hattie North, beloved daughter of Wiliam D. and Almira M. Botkin. She had been at school as usual, ate supper at 7 o'clock, and appeared well. Shortly after, she commenced crying with a severe pain in the head which increased until at 9 she ceased suffering. Hattie was a christ-like child. None knew her, but to love her; none named her but to praise her." Named in honor of Mrs. Hattie McCoy North, of Carbondale High School, the mantle of that lady seemed to have fallen on her. Though living in Otterville only a few months, there were many tears shed while the little white casket rested before the altar. Rev. J E Burke of Elsah, conducted the funeral. Hattie was a probationer in the M E church at Otterville. Resolutions of respect will be printed in Jerseyville papers by pupils of Otterville school. March 13th. Article dated Tuesday, March 19, 1895 The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Milfs (or Mills), aged four months, died Friday evening. The funeral took place from St. Mary's church Sunday afternoon where services were conducted by Rev. Father CA O'Reilly. The remains were interred in the Catholic cemetery. Article dated Friday, March 22, 1895 Died, in St. Louis Friday, Eddie second son of Ed and Lena Smith, aged six years. The boy had been suffering for some time with cancer of the brain. He was taken to St Louis about three weeks ago and an operation was performed. He stood it nicely and hopes were entertained for his recovery, but two weeks after the operation the angel of death summoned him. The funeral took place Sunday afternoon from the family residence, thence to the Catholic church, where Rev. H D Degenhardt conducted services. The remains were interred at the Catholic cemetery. The funeral was one of the largest in this city for some time. (Collinsville) James L. Morrissey, senior partner of Morrisey Bros, passed away at the family home on Belle Street Sunday morning of Lung troubles, after a lingering illness of many weeks. Mr. Morrissey was a native of Alton thirty-four years of age and single. He was a successful young business man and one whose friends were legion. His death was calm and peaceful, as had been his life. The funeral takes place today, from the family residence to the Cathedral at 9:30 o'clock. Martin Redmond, one of Alton's most respected and oldest citizens, died Saturday morning at the family home on Belle Street. Mr. Redmond had been ill but a few days and his death was due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased was a native of Queens county Ireland, came to America while quite young, and has been a resident of Alton for over forty years. A wife and two children survive him. The funeral took place from the Cathedral Sunday afternoon and was attended by a large concourse of friends. Mrs. Redmond is seriously ill and her husbands death has been kept from her knowledge. Article dated Tuesday, March 26, 1895 William Rawson, a plasterer of Highland, and an old resident of this county, died Sunday morning. The funeral took place at Troy this afternoon. Mrs. Wm B Vollintine Tuesday tried to take her own life by shooting herself with a shotgun. From the facts we can learn, the terrible act was committed during a temporary derangement of the mond brought on by bad health. She had been attending the revival meetings and the day before she united with the church. Yesterday a letter was found which she had written to her husband who had left that morning to serve on the jury at Greenville. What the contents were we have not heard. Tuesday morning about 8 o'clock she was seized with a desire to die, and taking the shotgun, entered the parlor and placed the muzzle over her heart and pulled the trigger. The gun slipped and instead of entering her breast the charge the charge lodged in her shoulder and arm. Drs Sharp and McKinney were sent for and did everything to alleviate her sufferings, Thursday morning her arm was amputated in hopes of saving her life, but it was of no avail. She died Friday morning. She leaves four children and a sorrowing husband to mourn her loss. The funeral took place this morning at 10 o'clock at Corrington Chapel, Rev. McCracken officiating. Article dated Friday, March 29, 1895 Sam Rawson and wife, of Collinsville, and Andrew and Sam Rawson and ladies, of St. Louis attended the funeral of Wm. Rawson, which occurred Tuesday. Died at her home Friday March 22nd at 5:30pm, Mrs. Mary E. Miller aged 81 years, 3 months and 9 days. The funeral took place Sunday from her home to the Lutheran church, thence to the Troy cemetery where she was interred beside her husband whose death occurred Oct 17, 1893. She leaves to mourn her loss a son H F Miller, also three grandchildren. A host of friends followed the remains to their last resting place.
