Aged 93 years the 31st day of March last, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefeits of the provisions of the Act of Congres - passed July 4, 1836. That she is the widow of Authur Crutchfield or Critchfield who served several tours in the war known as the Revolutionary War 1st She Says he was a private, as she recollects in the Company Commanded by Capt. James Shepperd. That the name of the Colonal if any, under which he Served or under which the Said Company was, She does not recollect, but she says the said Company was raised for the purpose of Keeping off the Indians, territory that the said Company as She recollects was raided in the Summer or fall of 1776, to Serve for 8(?) months and was discharged in the Winter of 1777 2nd. That on the 12th day of March as She recollects 1777. Her Said husband was draughted to Serve in the Regiment under Col Benjamin Cleveland and Major Walton, that his Brother John Crutchfield took her husbands place and Served out the term of his enlistment as Substitute for her Said husband Authu Crutchfield ____ She further Says that she recollects that her Said husband Authur Critchfield was a private She thinks, and She also thinks he Volunteered, in a Company Commanded by Capt. Hammons as She recollects & the impression is on her mind that the Cols name was Morgan, that her said husband She thinks entered the Service in the Summer of 1780 or 1781__ and Served until the Surrender of Cornwallis in October 1781__ & perhaps later. That Sometime after the Said Surrender her Said husband was honorably discharged from the Service aforesaid, She further Says She recollects distinctly to have Seen her Said husband's discharge or discharges from the Service above Setforth, but that from the laps of time, the Said discharges have been lost- or destroyed & She therefore cannot now produce it or them in evidence. She further Says that her & her Said husband Arthur Crutchfield, lived or resided, at the times She Sets forth when her Said husband Served as above Stated, in Surrey County State of North Carolina, She Says owing to the lak of her Said husband s discharge She has no evidence of a documentary character to present__but__would refer to the rolls that may be on file in the war office. She further Says that being to her extreme old age She finds it difficult to recollect the particulars which occured So long ago She would by have to refer to the accompanying Evidence. She further Says She was Married to the Said Authur Crutchfield on the 10th day of February one thousand Seven hundred & Seventy Seven, at Surrey County North Carolina whether there is any record evidence of the Said fact She does not know, She knows of no living witnes to the fact of her marriage. She further Says that her Said husband died on the 29th day of August 1814 and that She has unmarried a widow ever Since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof annexed, She says her name before her Said marriage was Lucy Scott her Lucy X Crutchfield mark Sworn to and Subscribed before me this day & year above written I also certify that I am well acquainted with the above named Lucy Crutchfield and believe her to be the widow of Authur Crutchfield, and that he was a Revolutionery Soldier as Setforth by her, from the general repulation (?) & understanding in the country. And I also Certify that the Said Lucy Crutchfield is unable from age and bodily infirmity to go before a court of record. Casey} } John Crutcfild } State of Illinois} Marion County} ss On this 20th day of November one thousand eight hundred and fifty before me Hezekiahi Rockhold an acting Justice of the peace in & for said County, duly authorised by law to administra oaths personally appeared Terry Crutchfield and Polly Crutchfield residents of Marion County Illinois the said Terry aged 65 years last July & the said Polly aged about 58 years and being by me duly sworn according to law on their oaths declare & say that they knew and were aquianted with Authu Crutchfield & Lucy Crutchfild while they lived in the State of Kentucy from about the year 1800 until the year 1814, when the said Authur Crutchfield died in the State of Indiana that they have known the said Lucy Crutchfield ever since & now know her, that they believe her age to be 95 years last march. That they know the said Authu & Lucy Crutchfield lived to geather and were known as husband and wife That their children live in this State & Indiana & bear the name of Crutchfield., That they have often heard the said Authur Crutchfield tell of his service in the (Revolutionary War) and that they never heard any one doubt the said Authur Crutchfield having been in the said , Revolutionary War, The said Terry Crutchfield says he has seen in the possession of the said Authur Crutchfield, the certifficates of dischargs of the said Authu for Services undered in the months stated service in the said war, but that the said dischages have been lost or destroyed = They further say that the said Authur Crutchfield left no child under 16 years of age at his death, That the said Lucy Crutchfield has remained a widow since the death of Authur Crutchfield in 1814 as above stated. They further say that they have been in formed truily believed that the said Authur Crutchfield and Lucy Crutchfield were married on the 10th day of February 1777 in North Carolina - That the information they received fix relation to the said marriage & date thereof came from the said Authur & Lucy Crutchfield, and that they understood the said Lucy's name before her marriage was Lucy Scott they say they make this declaration to enable the said Lucy Crutchfield to obtain a pension & that they are disentitled (? On this last word as it looks like disenteroled) ss} Terry Crutchfield } Polly Crutchfield Sworn to and Subscipted before me this day & year above written I also certify that the above named Torry Crutchfield & Polly Crutchfield are personally known to me to be persons entitled to full faith and credit Given much my hand this date above - stated ss H Rockhold JP Note: In another statement Robert Smith states that he first knew Lucy and Aruthur in 1804 or 1805 in Lincoln County, Kentucy and that they moved to Indiana about 1813 and he was informed that Arthur died in 1814 and that he knew Lucy in Indiana and has known her in this state about 11 years . A letter from the State of North Carolina Comptroller's office dated 17th day of January 1832 states that Arthur Crutchfield was paid Book No. 178 page 11 120 currency (and this was the english currency) no date given. He owned in 1784 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. Pleas and Quarter court session, Wilkes Co. NC, Microfilm 0020130 1778-1785, there are no page #'s This would be sometime in the Term of September 1779.
