Obituary of Georgia Reed Shank, Marion County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Wanda Reed Name of Deceased: Georgia Reed Shank DOG GUARDS BODY OF MISTRESS The insistent barking of a pet dog locked in the residence of Mrs. Georgia Shanks, 249 N. Lincoln, this morning impelled neighbors to call the police who found her dead. The 76 year- old woman, a widow, lived alone and was last seen Wednesday night, when she visited the J. C. Hall residence next door and complained of an aggravated heart condition from which she had suffered for some time. The little dog, her only companion, stood guard in a rocking chair beneath which Mrs. Shanks had fallen and viciously attacked relatives who attempted to reach her. A sister-in-law, Mrs. Joe Reed, was severely bitten on both wrists as she attempted to approach the body, and was given tetanus shots to prevent infection. Mrs. Shanks was born Oct. 12, 1867 in Sandusky County, Ohio to Levi and Cynthia (Scothorn) Reed and was married to George Shanks in Fremont, Ohio, Sept. 12, 1887. They came to Centralia in 1903 and celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary here in 1937. Mr. Shanks died in 1938. For many years Mrs. Shanks operated a millinery shop on North Lincoln and is well known in this vicinity. She was a member of the Methodist church. Survivors are two brothers, Joe Reed of Glenridge and Eli Reed, of Kell. Funeral arrangements are to be announced later. ------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organiza- tions or persons.
