He was married to Miss Sarah Stephens, May 6th 1835. Two sons and 4 daughters were born to them of these, only Mrs. Mary E. Coleman of Kinmundy, Ill., and Mrs. M. C. Garner of Idaho, survive him. They emigrated to Ill. in 1836, settling in Macoupin County. In 1840 they moved to Marion County, locating on a farm in Omega township where his wife died, Sept. 6th, 1860. He was again married in Sept., 1863, to Miss Jennie Harper; to them was born one child, which died in infancy. They moved to Odin in 1871, where his second wife died, July 10th, 1886. He was married the third time to Mrs. E. F. Beatty, Sept. 2nd, 1888. In politics he was a life-long Democrat. He was a member of the Christian church in Odin, joining this church at its organization in 1878. During his last sickness, which was long and painful, he often spoke of his approaching death; always expressing full faith in the saving power of Christianity. Only a few days before he died; he said he would soon be in Heaven, and requested all his relatives and friends to meet him there. He was a great sufferer, yet he never complained. He left full instructions as to his funeral services and business affairs, arranging everything in detail. The morning of May 28th, there was a short service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Barbee, conducted by Elder J. M. Hawley; then the body accompanied by relatives and friends was taken to Iuka; there kind friends were ready to convey the body to Siloam church, 6 miles north-east of Iuka, where a large and sympathetic congregation of old neighbors and friends were waiting. By his request, Rev. Henry A. Van Dusen preached the funeral sermon. The body was then tenderly laid to rest in Siloam cemetery, by the side of the wife of his youth. His career is one who had been an honored citizen of Marion county continually for 52 years.
