On the Tramp Since our last issue we have been tramping around in search of information. So far as we explored Massac County, we were favorably impressed with the prospects. The number of new houses, new fences, and new clearings argues a great degree of prosperity. The farms generally exhibit a thrifty condition also, while stock appears to have been well wintered. Wheat Its not all killed as many believed a few weeks ago. The crop has suffered with the open winter but the prospects for a fair yield is much improved recently. In Johnson county the wheat crop will average very well with other years. Pope county is not so favorable in this respect as either this or Johnson counties. Fruit The fruit has every appearance of being abundant. It has suffered but little from frost but may yet be damaged by it. Renoldsburg This is a small town in the upper part of Johnson county. It is in the midst of a thickly settled country which abounds in wealth. W. Renolds, from whom the place takes its name is an enterprising citizen. He with a few others have completed a nice seminary at that place which does credit to the citizens of the town and county and will without doubt, become celebrated as an institution of learning. The school superintendent in that county assured us that he was resolved to add one more star, brighter than all the others which Johnson county had placed on their banner, and that was the star of education. We have never seen a community in Ills. more in earnest on this subject than that of Renoldsburg and vicinity. Golconda We also visited the above named place. It was the regular term of the circuit court there and a great many of the citizens of the county were together. Mrs. Alsman arrested on a change of murder, and for a while in our county jail, was tried and acquitted. The business of the court was not very large. -- Mr. Foot, an attorney of that place known to many of our citizens, has gone to Tennessee to practice law. We had the pleasure of seeing Gen. G. R. Baum at the bar to that place. On Tuesday last he made a very patriotic speech, such as the Gen. can do to perfection, for he is one of the true and tried patriots. We notice that the Golconda Herald runs up his name as their candidate for congress, which is followed by that of D. W. Mann for the state Senate. New Liberty This is a small village situated in Pope county. Like all the rest of the country we have visited, is prospering. It has three dry goods stores, each doing a good business. Several new buildings have been built since the war there. ------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organiza- tions or persons.
