Miscellaneous Newspaper Items - 1866 - Massac County Metropolis Promulgator April 21, 1866 Page 2 On last Saturday the Negroes in Cairo had quite a large and well conducted ratification meeting, if the statements of the Times and Democrat can be relied on. Col. John OLNEY and D. T. LINEGAR addressed the meeting. These gentlemen are regarded as among the best speakers in Southern Ills, and the cairo [sic] papers speak well of their efforts. But besides these a darkey named Bird also spoke and according to the accounts given he equalized or even surpassed the white speakers. PICTURES - Those who desire life-like representations of themselves have an unusual fine opportunity to do so, at the FLOATING PHOTOGRAPHER now lying at our levy, just above the wharf. Mr. Johnson is an old and experienced hand in the business, having formerly kept a gallery in Cincinnati Ohio. He will remain a few days. Call on him at once. Union Meeting. The Voters of Metropolis and vicinity who are identified with the Great Union Party of the country, are requested to meet at the court house in this city on Saturday evening (this) 21st Inst., for the purpose of organizing a Union Club. This position of itself is a recommendation but aside from this he comes highly recommended as a schollar, [sic] a gentleman and a skillful Physician. We earnestly hope he may receive the encouragement he deserves. The building season has again arrived and no house should stand long unpainted. We therefore call attention to the new advertisement of Anthony Higgens in to-days paper. Mr. Higgens has become a good workman and is now doing a good business. He will perform his work just as he promised to do and at the time agreed on.
