D. 124th Batallion Illinois Volunteers; Page 1; Sworn affadivit given by Elizabeth Hobbs to a notary publin in Frontenac, Crawford Co. Kansas; Concerning the Death of her son Travis Ulyssis S. Hobbs. She states that there was no one present at the death of her son Travis Ulyssis S. Hobbs except a young man that had joined them enroute to (did not say what destination was) and her 4 young children all minor children, The child Travis Ulyssis S. Hobbs apparently died early in the evening and when they arrived at their destination, the young man that had joined them on their way, left at this point and went on his way without saying where he was going. She states that she never asked or learned his name. and she further states that she cannot give anymore information on this. (Date of this affidavit April 27, 1893) Pages 3-4; Another sworn affadavit by Elizabeth Hobbs in Frontenac, crawford Co. Kansas Feburary 17,1898; Concerning the cause of her husband Presley Hobbs Cause of death. (Presley Hobbs died January 1880 in Monroe Co. Missouri) Elizabeth Hobbs states; I was never before an examining board; A man representing himself to be a examiner called at my residence in Frontenac, Kansas. in the month of December 1893, and I answered such questions as he put to me. I never stated to him in any manner that my husband died of Typahiocel Pnewmonia because no doctor ever stated to me what his cause of death was, I do not know what the cause of death of my husband was unless it was chronic diahrrhea, that I do know he contacted while in military service. To the best of my knowledge he died of chronic diaherria, during the last sickness treated by a doctor that was what he was treated for. Signature; Elizabeth Hobbs, (This document was filed by O.E. Howe Attorney for the claiment;) Page 5-6; Affadavit by Elizabeth Hobbs; To George E. Lemon Attorney in Washington D.C. concerning additional evidence of children under 16 yrs. of age living at home; Elizabeth Hobbs states; I am the mother of the following children; Amanda L. Hobbs b. May 18, 1866, Harriet A. Hobbs b. Feburary 6,1868, Travis Ulyssis S. Hobbs b. January 18,1870 d. July 7, 1870, Sara E. Hobbs b. December 11, 1873, Elizabeth Hobbs states that she upon instructions did submit this information from family record (Probably Family Bible) To the pension department September 25, 1884. Pages 7-8; Affadavit given by Elizabeth Hobbs in Hancock Co. Illinois; (No date on this document) In the matter of pension; Elizabeth Hobbs widow of Presley Hobbs Private Co. D 124 Regiment Illinois volunteers; Elizabeth Hobbs personally appeared before me a Notary Public in and fore aforesaid Co. and State, Elizabeth Hobbs the cliamint in the aforesaid case who being duly sworn declares as follows; I Elizabeth Hobbs am unable to the births of my two youngest children for the following reasons; Rebecca E. Hobbs b. December 4, 1871 and Sara E. Hobbs b. December 11, 1873 Both born in Pike County Illinois in the Mississippi river bottoms and there was no physician present at the birth of either of the aforesaid children; That the women that waited upon her (Midwives) were the wives of men working with her husband cutting timber in the winter in the area and did not reside there permanantly but lived in shanties and left in the springtime. and she had no further acquaintence with them and knows nothing of their wherebouts, and that her personal address is Schell city, Vernon Co. Page 9-10; This affadavit concerns the fact that Elizabeth Hobbs never remarried after the death of her husband Presley Hobbs so that she might stay entitled to his military pension to support her and her minor children, Character witness appeared with her before a notary public for this purpose. This affadavit dated June 29, 1891; Pages 11-12; This ia a third affadavit given by John W. Madden stateing that he has personally known Elizabeth Hobbs and that she is the widow of Presley Hobbs and has never remarried; dated June 18, 1891 Pages 13-14; Another affadavit given by John S. Mckee that he has known Elizabeth Hobbs for five years and that she has never Remarried and that she has no income except by her own labor, dated June 18,1891 Pages 15-16-17; This the Account of Presley Hobbs appearing before the Court clerk of McDonnough Co. Illinois to apply for a pension due to his wound sustained in the service of his country at Champion Hill Mississippi where he had his Left Eye Shot out. Presley Hobbs states; I enlisted in Company D 124 Regiment Illinois Volunteers August 11,1862 and was discharged August 16, 1865, the following is a physical description of Presley Hobbs (1877) 6 ft. 1 in tall, Dark Complexion, Brown Hair, Blue Eyes. Presley Hobbs states that on May 16,1863 while in the battle of Champion Hill Mississippi, he sustained a gunshot wound to his left eye causing its loss, He asks that he be placed on the pension roll because of his wound. Presley Hobbs brought with him the following witnesses to his signature, Joshua Scott and Elizabeth Scott; this affadavit was taken in Birmingham, Scheyler Co. Illinois. dated June 22, 1877 submitted to the Department of the Interior December 18, 1877; Signature; Presley Hobbs (almost not legible) Pages 18-19; This is a declaration and verification of a widow of a soldier with children under the age of 16 living at home dependent; It states; Presley Hobbs was a soldier of the Union Army volunteering for military service at Colchester Illinois, on August 11, 1862, and that he sustained a wound losing his left eye at the battle of Champion Hill Mississippi, and that he died January 22, 1880 in Monroe Co. Missouri, from a disease contacted while in the service of his country, Chronic diahrrea, and that he had been elgible for a pension under the certificate number 189-879; Elizabeth Hobbs states; That she was married to Presley Hobbs her maiden name Elizabeth Scott on September 6, 1855 at Lamoine, McDonnough Co. Illinois. By a Reverend George Clevenger; and at this date April 28,1884 she is a widow with 5 minor children; Witnesses; John Scott and Anna Scott; Dated April 28,1884 Pages 19-20; Elizabeth Hobbs appears in Litchfield, Crawford Co. Kansas to keep her military pension she at this time was 56 yrs old. Pages 21-22; These pages show Presley Hobbs hospital records while in the Army; Admitted to Hospital October 13, 1862 with Herbis Typhoid; returned to duty November 3, 1862 May 16, 1863 admitted to hospital with wound to the left eye, October 11, 1864 returned to duty. Pages 23-24; These pages are just a rehash of the fact Presley Hobbs was wounded and lost his left eye. Pages 25-26-27-28; These pages 25-26 are again a rehash of Presley Hobbs entitlement to a pension due to his being wounded; Pages 27-28, This is the final page concerning Elizabeth Scott Hobbs wife of Presley Hobbs; died and that the last check paid by the Army had to be returned to the United States treasury; Her death was in Frontenac, Crawford Co. kansas October 1, 1916 her death certificate simply states (Death due to Old Age) 82 yrs old. She is buried in Mt.
