The Eagle [VT] December 25, 1851
In Hillgrove, McDonough Co. Illinois, Oct 27th, Erastus H. Gilchrist, aged 12 
years, son of Charles G. and Minerva H. Gilchrist formerly of Rockingham, Vt. 
His death was occasioned by a kick on the head from a playful horse 'which he 
was leading to water.' It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of 
this interesting and promising youth. His tender years, and the circumstances 
attending his death render this dispensation of Providence peculiarly 
afflicative. He survived the injury four days, during which derangement kindly 
rended him insensible to his sufferings. [Com.]
