Goodwin Passes Away at Home of Her Daughter in Canon City, Colorado Died, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hattie J. Freye, in Canon City, Colo., Sunday, May 15, 1904, Mrs. John Goodwin, aged 72 years 10 months and 13 days. The news of Mrs. Goodwin's death, while not unexpected, was received in Nunda, where for so many years she had made her home, with the most profound sorrow. She had endeared herself to the hearts of all in the community. Here was a life well spent and crowned with good works and kind deeds. She was a devoted Christian wife and mother. To her children she leaves the heritage of an honest name and an unsallied character. To the church she leaves the wealth of a Christian life and the example of a Christian death. About twelve Months ago she went from Numda to Colorado to live with her daughter, also hoping that her health would be benefitted. But for some time she had been growing worse, and while every care was given her, it was realized that her going could not be long delayed. The immediate cause of her death was apoplexy. Sabra C. Chase was born July 2, 1831, in Auburn, N.Y. being the daughter of Wilcox and Julia Chase. She was united in marriage with John Goodwin Feb. 10, 1852. In 1853 Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin came west, and located near Crystal Lake, where they acquired a competency in farming and the pickle industry. The husband died Jan. 22, 1892, and since that time Mrs. Goodwin has made her home with her children of whom there are four: Victor C. of Elgin, W.A. and Fred C. of Crystal Lake, and Mrs. Hattie J. Freye of Canon City, Colo. All were present at the funeral. There are also left seven grandchildren. Mrs. Goodwin united with the "Baptist church at about the age of twenty years, and has lived a consistent and devout Christian life. Over her silent there hovers the sweet recollections of a beautiful past. Tender and gentle her heart ever beat responsive to the calls of humanity. The body was brought from Canon City to Nunda arriving Tuesday evening, and the funeral was held from the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Goodwin at 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and from the Methodist Episcopal church at 1:30, Rev. W.B. Doble delivering a strong and touching eulogy. Mesdames C.E. Dickinson and H.L. Patten and W.W. Dike and C.F. Dike sang. The floral gifts were numerous and beautiful. The funeral was in charge of F.E. Cox and the pall bearers were: C.E. Irwin, Ben Throop, Andrew Henderson, E.J. Coquilette, Sumner Pingry and J.W. Hartman. Interment was in Union cemetery in the family burying ground."
