It has never been fully determined just how the accident happened, as no one was present at the time, and nothing was known until one of the top men heard him shout to stop the engine that causes the screen to revolve, which was done at once, but before anyone reached him he was dead. It is presumed that he was up there for the purpose of oiling some part of the machinery when he met his death. The accident happened at the mine of the McLean County Coal Co. He left a widow and three small children dependent.
