All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm submitted by: Joy Fisher ROBERT ARMSTRONG Of Illinois Robert Armstrong, whose widow, Nancy Green Armstrong, applied for pension in May, 1836, in Menard County, Illinois, was born May 28, 11760. The widow made her deposition in the presence of Abraham Lincoln, member of Congress from the District, and his signature appears. When Robert Armstrong was 19 or 20 years of age he lived at Crowder's Creek, North Carolina. He enlisted as a substitute for his father, James Armstrong, in the North Carolina militia and served as various times under Colonel Little and General Ashe. He was in the battle of Briar Creek. Robert Armstrong died in Menard County, September 9, 1S34. The widow declared that they married January 22, 1787, and that she was born February 6, 1768. Her application was rejected on the ground of insufficient proof of Robert Armstrong's service. The application named the following children: James, born 1788, died 178:9; Jesse, born 1789; Robert, Jr., born 1792, died 1798; Rhoda, born 1794; Royal, born 1797; Hugh, born 1800; John of Jack, born 1803; Betsey, born 1805; Nancy, born 1809; and Elizabeth, born 1812. Note:- Royal is also spelled Ryall and Rial in the application. Hugh Armstrong was a lieutenant under Captain Abraham Lincoln in 1832. Jack Armstrong had a wrestling match with Abraham Lincoln.
