Celia Ann Adams Tincher obit, Petersburg Observer, 1905: Death of Mrs. Callie Tincher - Mrs. Celia Tincher, aged 44 years, 4 months, and 10 days, died at her home in Sweetwater, Ill., Monday, March 27, '05. She is survived by a husband and a larger number of relatives and friends. The remains were shipped Tuesday to Kentucky her former home. Mr. and Mrs. Tincher lived in Athens before moving to Sweetwater. (Petersburg Observer) Joseph Workman obit, Petersburg Observer, 1914: Bids Adieu to Life at 87 - Mr. Joseph Quincy Adams Workman Passes Away at the Home of His Daughter, Mrs. Henry Baum, Friday - Died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Baum, near Tice, Friday, November 20, 1914, Mr. Joseph Quincy Adams Workman, aged 87 years. The decedent was a native of Kentucky. His wife passed to her reward last April. Together they had walked for over 62 years, and they were separated by death only a few months. The decedent is survived by a son and two daughters, eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He had lived a useful life and died in the faith and hope of the gospel. His declining days were made as pleasant as possible by the kind ministrations of his daughter, Mrs. H. Baum, with whom he lived. The funeral was held last Sunday afternoon at his late home, conducted by Rev. Henry Love of Indian Point. Interment at Rose Hill cemetery. Markretta Kehl Baum obit, unknown newspaper, 1928: Aged Woman Who Broke Her Hip Dies With Pneumonia - Mrs. Margaret Baum, residing near Nortonville, died at 5:30 o'clock this morning at Passavant Hospital. She was brought to the hospital following an accident at her home, in which she fell and fractured her right hip. She was 90 years, 11 months and 19 days old at the time of her death. She made her home with her niece, Mrs. Thana Sorrells, near Nortonville. Coroner C.S. Young impaneled a jury at Murrayville and an inquest was held at the Thompson Undertaking Parlors at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The jury heard testimony from Mrs. Sorrells and from Dr. G.O. Webster of Murrayville, and returned a verdict that decedent came to her death from bronchial pneumonia, with a fracture of the femur at the right hip as a contributory cause. The accident occurred July 27 at the Sorrells' home, the broken hip being the result of a fall. The jury consisted of Mrs. Susan Carlson, foreman; Joe Kelly, C.E. Bolton, Mrs. J.L. Wyatt, Mrs. Lily Jones and Thomas M. Ring, clerk. Margaret Kehl was born in Germany and came to this country when she was sixteen years of age. She was married to George Baum, who preceded her in death many years ago. She was the mother of eight children, of whom only one daughter, Mrs. Maggie Rhodes of Petersburg, survives. For the past seven years Mrs. Baum has made her home with her niece, Mrs. Edgar Sorrells. The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Baum was held from the Lutheran church at Petersburg at 11 o'clock Monday, Rev. Benj. H. Selcke officiating, music by the church choir. The pall bearers were friends in the old home community of Petersburg, Messrs. Henry Eichenler, Geo. Jurgens, August Hoffman, Louis George and Clarence Stier. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery near Petersburg. Leon Baum obit, unknown newspaper, 1973: Athens - Leon J. Baum, 71, of R.R. 2, Athens died at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, April 14 at St. John's Hospital. Mr. Baum was born August 13, 1901 in Menard County, the son of Henry and Alice Workman Baum. He is survived by two brothers, Clarence Baum of Petersburg and Eural Baum of Athens; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Huflin of Greenview, Miss Margaret Baum and Miss Maude Baum, both of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 17 at Mott and Henning Funeral Home in Athens with Rev. William Pullin officiating. Burial was in Hall Cemetery at Athens. George Baum obit, Petersburg Observer, 1914: The late George Baum was born in Friesenheim, Baden, Germany, Jan. 1, 1831, and departed this life Jan. 28, 1914. The funeral services took place in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, on Friday, Jan. 30. His pastor the Rev. C.A. Weiss, officiated in German and English. The deceased was interred at Rose Hill. Mr. Baum came to this country when a growing boy, and spent most of his life, about sixty-four years, in Illinois. He was united in marriage with Margaret Kehl, in August, 1856, at Jacksonville . Of the eight children born to them, only three together with the widow survive him. They are: Henry, Mrs. John Rhodes, and Marion. Margaret Baum Rhodes obit, unknown newspaper, 1949: Mrs. Maggie Rhodes Dead at Eighty-two - Mrs. Maggie A. Rhodes, 82 years old, died at 11 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 at the home of her grandson Ancil Rhodes east of Petersburg, following an illness of more than two years. Mrs. Rhodes was born on a farm east of Petersburg on Dec. 17, 1866 the daughter of George and Margaret Kehl Baum. She attended the school near her home and on March 22, 1887 she was married to John A. Rhodes, and they continued to live in the community in which she was born. Mr. Rhodes died June 20, 1923. Surviving are one son, Ira E. Rhodes; and the grandson with whom she made her home. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. The remains were brought to the Satorius Funeral Home and services were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. B.H. Selcke. Burial was in Rose Hill, pallbearers being Carl Schafer, Otto Geriets, Eural Baum, Clarence Baum, Leon Baum and William Glenn. Flowers were cared for by Mrs. Clarence Baum, Mrs. Ernest Osborne, Mrs. Carl Schafer and Betty Sharp. John Baum obit, Petersburg Observer, 1905: John W. Baum died suddenly Saturday of heart trouble. He was a son of George Baum and wife, and was a young man of exemplary character. He was aged 29 years and 28 days. Besides his parents he is survived by two brothers Henry and Marion and one sister, Mrs. John Rhodes. Deceased was for many years a member of the Lutheran church in Petersburg, from which the funeral was held at 1 a.m., Tuesday, conducted by Rev. Mr. Isley. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery. Hilke Balster Taapken obit, unknown newspaper, 1901: Died - Taapken - At the home of her son, Wert Taapken, near Petersburg, Ill., March 15, 1901, Mrs. Hilke Maria Taapken; aged 77 years, 9 months and 3 days. She was born in Ostfriesland, Germany and married Johann Folkerts Taapken, who died nearly fifty years ago. She came to this country with her children in 1870. Besides three sons she leaves one brother, Henry Balster of Tice. Funeral services were held in St. Paul’s Lutheran church in Petersburg on Sunday afternoon, Rev. P. Weil officiating. Buried at Rose Hill. Henry Balster obit, Petersburg Observer, September 29, 1932: Petersburg's Last G.A.R. Member Is Dead - Henry Balster Dies At Home Here; Funeral Held Saturday. Henry Balster, Petersburg's last surviving Grand Army member, died at his home here Thursday morning September 29 at the age of ninety-one years, eight months, and ten days. Mr. Balster had been in failing health for the past three years, but it was only a few days before his death that his condition became such as to cause immediate concern. Of the six remaining G.A.R. members in the county, Mr Balster was the only one whose home was in the city. Henry Balster was born January 19, 1841, at Marks, Hanover, Germany and there spent the first nineteen years of his life, coming to America in 1860. He came directly to America in 1860, to Menard County only a year when the Civil War broke out, and he enlisted in Co. K, 114th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, and served three years, having been mustered out of the service on August 3, 1865 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. After being discharged from the army, Mr. Balster returned to Petersburg, and was married here on March 13, 1866 to Miss Seede F. Luken and to this union were born eight children of whom two died in infancy, and one daughter Mrs. Marie Kasten died November 20, 1928. Mrs. Balster preceded him in death twenty years ago. Surviving are the following children: John, Ben, and Tom Balster of Tice; Harmon Balster of Louisville, Kentucky, and Henry Balster Jr. of Petersburg. He is survived also by several grandchildren and a great many other relatives and friends. Mr. Balster was baptized in the Evangelical faith before he came to America, and was a charter member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church. He was proud of the fact that he furnished the brick used in the construction of the present church edifice. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1 from St. Paul's Evangelical Church in this city, conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. Schnathorst, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Seede Luken Balster obit, unknown newspaper, 1912 : Died, at her home in this city on Tuesday evening June 18, 1912, Mrs. Henry Balster aged 68 years, 5 months, and 7 days - Mrs. Henry Balster nee Luken, was born Jan. 11, 1844, in Amt Aurich Ostfriesland, Germany. In 1865 she came to this country, and has since resided here. She was married to Henry Balster Mar. 13, 1866. To this union eight children were born of which 2 died in infancy. Mrs. Balster was an invalid for over two years. She passed away Tues. evening at 11:30 leaving her husband Henry Balster, five sons, John, Herman of Deerfield, Mo., Behrens of Petersburg; Henry of Pawnee, Ill., Thomas of Tice; one daughter Mary Kasten of Petersburg, eight grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Balk of Vernon Co. Mo. And Mrs. H. Tiemann of this city. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at the St. Luke's Church conducted by Rev. Theo. F. Kruger Internment at Rose Hill. The decedent is survived by five sons, John, Benjamin, Henry and Thomas, all of the community and Harmon, Louisville, Ky. Ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. Harmon Balster obit, unknown newspaper, 1941: Former Resident Dead - Word has reached here belatedly of the death, on January 12, of Harmon Balster of Louisville, Ky, formerly of Menard county. Mr. Balster is survived by his wife, Maude, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Kramer and one son Wm. Balster of Kansas City, Kansas; two brothers, Ben and Thomas Balster of Tice community; four grandchildren and other relatives. He was born in Menard county, but had not lived here for many years. Funeral services were held at Nevada, Mo. and burial was there. Ben Balster obit, unknown newspaper, 1953: Ben Balster, 78, Former Resident Here Died Jacksonville Tues., Dec. 30 - Ben A. Balster, 78, a farmer in the Damascus Community for many years, and later until several years ago an Athens resident, passed away at Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday where he had resided since leaving Athens. Mr. Balster was born May 20, 1874, near Tice, a son of Henry and Sadie Balster. In 1900 he was married to Miss Nellie Snell and the couple engaged in farming: Mrs. Balster died six years ago. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Eural Baum, and a brother, Tom Balster, both of Petersburg, and four grandchildren. A son, Emerson, died in 1941. The body is at the Satorius Funeral Home in Petersburg, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, with Rev. Robert Niehaus officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Nellie Balster obit, unknown newspaper, 1947: Mrs. Nellie M. Balster, 73, Died Tuesday, Ill Long Time - Mrs. Nellie M. Balster, 73, wife of Ben Balster, and a resident of Athens a little over five years, passed away at Jacksonville, Illinois, on Tuesday. Mrs. Balster had been bedfast the last few years since she broke her hip in a fall. She was originally from Kansas and came to Tice when a child with her parents. In 1900 she was married to Ben Balster and for many years they farmed in the Tice Community, moving to Athens on their retirement, where they resided since. Those to survive are: the husband, Ben, one daughter, Mrs. Eural Baum, of Tice; a sister, Mrs. Mollie Hartley, Petersburg, and four grandchildren. A son, Emmerson, preceded her in death passing away in 1941. Services were held from the Satorius Funeral Home in Petersburg Thursday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Keith Loveless, officiating. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Petersburg. Emmerson Balster obit, unknown newspaper, 1941: Emmerson Balster Dies After Month's Illness - Emmerson L. Balster, thirty-one years old and a resident of Tice community during most of his life, died Monday evening at 7 o'clock at St. John's Hospital, after an illness of more than a month. Mr. Balster was first taken ill about five weeks before his death, suffering from a kidney ailment. He entered the hospital later for an operation. Early last week, he became seriously ill and was rushed to the hospital, where pneumonia and other complications developed, causing his death. Mr. Balster was born on a farm near Petersburg on January 9, 1910, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Balster. He spent all of his life in the Tice community, attending Damascus school, and later engaging in farming with his father. He was married on October 13, 1933 to Miss Lois Osborne, and they have one son, Eugene, six years old. Surviving are his wife, and a son, his parents, and one sister, Mrs. Eural Baum and a number of other relatives and friends. Mr. Balster was a young man who made many friends. Always kindly, courteous, sincere, he had the liking and respect of everyone who knew him, and he will be greatly missed, not only in his own family, but by the people of the community in which he lived. The remains were removed to the Thompson & Harms Funeral Home here and later to the Harris Osborne home. Funeral services were held at the Christian church at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Mack A. Warren, and burial was in Rose Hill. Pallbearers were George Lee, Bruce Jackson, Harmon Janssen, Meinert Simmering, Fred Patton and Ancil Rhodes. Mary Jacobs Stier obit, unknown newspaper, 1940: Mrs. Mary Stier Dead After Short Illness - Mrs. Mary Stier, wife of Louis Stier and a life-long resident of the Tice community, died at her home four and a half miles southeast of this city at 7:15 Thursday evening, March 7 at the age of 71 years. She was ill only a short time, suffering from influenza and complications. Mrs. Stier was born on the farm on which she died, on October 22, 1868, the daughter of Henry B. and Nanke Luken Jacobs. Living there with her parents until she married to Louis Stier, and upon the death of her father and mother, they continued to live in the house in which she was born. She is survived by her husband and a number of nieces and nephews, all the members of her immediate family having preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in this city at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. B.H. Selcke and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers were Harmon Winkelmann, August Wilde, Edward Klingbeil, Louis Winkelman, Fletcher Terry and John Cassens. Meta Tieman Reitz obit, unknown newspaper, 1947: Mrs. Reitz Dead - Mrs. Meta M. Reitz, of Springfield, widow of the late Herman Reitz of this community, died at St. John's Hospital Friday Mar. 14, at the age of 78. She was a patient at the hospital for 12 days. Mrs. Reitz was born near Petersburg on Aug. 15, 1868, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Tieman. She was married on Aug. 7, 1887 to Herman Reitz who preceded her in death about 25 years ago. For a number of years she had lived in Springfield. Surviving are one daughter Mrs. Henry Gereits of Springfield and one sister Mrs. Mary Klingbeil of this city. The body was brought to the Satorius Funeral Home here and services were held at St. Pauls church at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Christopher Boland. Burial was in Rose Hill. Miss Freda Ortgessen and Mrs. Elizabeth Ramsey sang, with Miss Betha Schmidt accompanist. Pallbearers were Henry Miller, H.G. Balster, Harry Zuhlke, Harry Schafer, Henry Gellerman and Powell Taapken. Mary Tieman Klingbeil obit, unknown newspaper, 1953: Mrs. Klingbeil Dead - Mrs. Mary Klingbeil, a lifelong resident of this community, died at 9:40 a.m. Thursday, April 2 at Memorial Hospital, aged almost 77. She had been ill for several years, but had been in the hospital only a short time. Mrs. Klingbeil was born near Petersburg on August 3, 1876, a daughter of Harmon and Meta Tieman. She was married to Lacey Schultz, who died a number of years ago and on June 29, 1925 she was married to Otto Klingbeil, who died on July 8, 1946. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. The remains were taken to the Thompson-Harms & Hurley Funeral Home, and were removed to St. Pauls E&R church for services, which were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, April 4, conducted by Rev. R.S. Niehaus. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Evaline Moorhead Snell obit, unknown newspaper, 1917: Evelyn Snell was born near Williamsburg, Ohio, March 25, 1842, and died April 15, 1917, aged 75 years and 16 days. She was the eldest daughter of William and Margaret Moorhead and lived with her parents until she was 20 years of age, at which time she came to LaSalle Co., Illinois. On June 17, 1872, she was united in marriage to Arphad Snell who survives her. To this union were born three daughters, one dying in infancy, one Mrs. Nellie Balster, with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Molly Hartley of Petersburg. She also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Sam Conover and Mrs. Oscar Jones, both of Hamilton, Ohio, and two brothers, James Moorhead of South Dakota, and Ira Moorhead of Petersburg. She was a woman of many sterling qualities and was held in the highest respect by the community in which she lives. She became a member of the United Brethren church in her youth and remained a consistent member of that church through life. Arphad Snell obit, unknown newspaper, 1924: Arphad Snell Whose Death Occurred Last Week, Was Civil War Veteran - Following is a short sketch of the life of Arphad Snell, whose death occurred August 18, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Hartley, south of the city. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 20 at 10 P.M., from the late residence, and the remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill cemetery. Arphad Snell was born near Williamsburg, Ohio on February 16, 1841, the son of Daniel and Jane Snell. In the fall of 1852 the family moved to La Salle County, Ill., where he lived until he enlisted in Company G, 129th Infantry Regiment Illinois Volunteers. He was a member of the local G. A. R. Post, which disbanded last year. On June 17, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Evaline Moorhead. To this union were born three children, one dying in infancy. Mrs. Snell preceded him in death about seven years ago. He leaves to mourn his passing, two daughters, Mrs. Ben Balster and Mrs. Charles Hartley, with whom he made his home; also two grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. James Riggs of Deer Park, Illinois. Mr. Snell had lived in Menard County many years, and for a number of years was engaged in the brick and tile factory at Tice. Mollie Snell Hartley obituary, unknown newspaper, 1970: Mrs. Hartley Dead At 87 - Mrs. Mollie Elizabeth Hartley of Petersburg died at 8:30 p.m. Monday, November 9 at Memorial Hospital, Springfield. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Hartley was born May 31, 1883 at Clermont, Ohio, daughter of Arphad and Evaline S. Moorhead Snell. She was married in 1904 to Charles Hartley who died Oct. 2, 1936. Surviving is one niece, Mrs. Ermal Baum, Athens, and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Celia Hartley, Greenview. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 11 at the Hurley Funeral Home, Rev. Wayne Espeseth officiating, and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Ira Moorhead obit, unknown newspaper, 1926: Ira Moorhead died at his home here Thursday, February 18 at the age of almost seventy years. He was born July 31, 1856 near Williamsburg, Ohio, the son of William and Margaret Moorhead. In 1880 he came to Illinois, and since that time had spent his life in LaSalle and Menard counties. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Oscar Jones of Hamilton, Ohio, one brother, James Moorhead of Clear Lake, South Dakota, a number of nephews and nieces and a great many friends. Funeral services were held Friday, February 19 from the Satorius Funeral Home, Rev. T.G. Melton officiating and the remains were interred in Rose Hill cemetery. Louis Schmidt obit, Petersburg Observer, 1907: Aged German Passes Away - Louis Schmidt, a Highly Respected Citizen is Mourned by Relatives and Friends - Louis Schmidt, aged 83 years, 9 months, and 20 days, a highly respected citizen, died Sunday October 13, at the home of his son six miles south of the city. The deceased was born in Germany but came to the United States when comparatively early in life. He has resided in Illinois for thirty-seven years. His home is in Cass county where he owned a farm, but for the past thirteen years he has lived with his son, Fred. The deceased is survived by two sons and four daughters: Henry of Athens and Fred of near Tallula; Mrs. Lizzie Jeske, Mrs. Bertha Scheibner of Springfield, Mrs. Anna Johnson of this city and Mrs. Hannah Hendricks of Cass County. The funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m., Rev. Theodore Krueger officiating. Interment was made in Rose Hill cemetery near Petersburg. Johanna Schmidt Frerichs obit, Petersburg Observer, 1954: Mrs. Frerichs Dead at Age of Ninety - Mrs. Hannah Frerichs, 90, of Greenview, died at her home at 3:45 p.m. Friday. She was born in Germany on April 18, 1864, a daughter of Louis and Dena Brummerloh Schmidt. She was married to Thomas Frerichs who preceded her in death. Mrs. Frerichs was a member of St. Paul's Church, Petersburg. Surviving are two sons, Carl, of Greenview and Fred of Athens; one daughter, Mrs. Theodore Miller of Greenview; one brother, Fred Schmidt, Petersburg; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The body was taken to the Mott funeral home, Athens and funeral services were held Monday at St. Paul's Church, Petersburg, Rev. Robert S. Niehaus officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery James Madison Derry obit, Petersburg Observer, 1905: J.M. Derry was born in London county, Virginia, September 19, 1822, and died at his home in Petersburg, Ill., Thursday, February 23, 1905, aged 82 years, 5 months and 4 days. He came to Illinois when twenty-seven years old and settled on a farm near Springfield. He was married to Cordelia Kalb April 17, 1851, and to this union was born three children; one dying in infancy. Those surviving are: Mrs. J.H. Elmore, of Chula, Mo., and E. Derry, of Menard county. His first wife died Oct. 6, 1854. Mr. Derry was again married to Martha Pollock October 17, 1861. To this union was born ten children: Charles, Benjamin, Lilly, Libbie, Ethel, Mrs. John White, Mrs. Samuel Ennis, all of Menard county, A.E. Derry, of Piatt county, Mrs. Homer Clark, of Sheridan, Mo. There are twenty-six grand children and four great grandchildren with many other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He united with the Methodist church when quite young and until about five years ago, when his health failed him, was a very attentive member. He was a devoted husband and loving father Martha Jane Pollock Derry obit, Petersburg Observer, 1917: A Good Woman Called Home - Obituary of Mrs. Martha J. Derry, Who Passed Away in Petersburg, Jan. 15, 1917. Martha Jane Pollock, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pollock, was born in Jefferson Co., Ohio, July 19, 1841. Departed this life Jan. 15, 1917, aged 75 years, 5 months, and 27 days. She came with her parents to Illinois, settling on a farm near Athens in 1851. She married James M. Derry Oct. 17, 1861, who died Feb. 23, 1905. To them were born four sons, John, who died in infancy, Chas. H., Addison E., Benjamin J., of this county, six daughters, Emmer White, Anna Ennis, Lily Patton, Ethel Robbins, of Menard county, Libby Batterton of Bloomington and Ada Clark of South Dakota. She is survived by one brother, Rev. H. B. Pollock of Decatur, two step children, Mrs. J.H. Elmore of Polo, Mo., and E.N. Derry of this county, nineteen grand children and two great grandchildren. Decedent had five brothers in the Civil War, one, William, was killed in the battle of Jackson, Miss. She became a Christian and united with the M.E. church when she was fourteen years of age and remained faithful to the end. She lived in a loving and loyal obedience to her Master and was a faithful attendant upon the church services while strength lasted. There never was a more kind and affectionate mother, a more loving wife, nor a kinder neighbor. White Dies From Injury - Death Occurred Monday in Hospital, Was Member of Pioneer Menard Family. John E. White, one of the oldest native-born residents of Menard county died at 5 o'clock Monday evening at Springfield Hospital, at the age of eighty-four years. Mr. White had been in the hospital several weeks, suffering from a fractured hip, the result of a fall at his home. He was born in a log cabin on the old White homestead five miles southeast of this city, in the Lebanon community, on October 15, 1851, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. White, his parents being members of that band of hardy pioneers who first settled in what is now the eastern half of Menard county. He received his early education at North Sangamon Academy at Indian Point, and later graduated from Lincoln College, at Lincoln. He was married to Miss Emma Anne Derry on March 12, 1885 and to them were born three children, Mrs. Fred Frerichs and Robert White, both of this community, and a daughter Litta, who preceded her father in death. He is survived by his wife, the daughter and son named above and a great many other more distant relatives and friends. Mr. White for many years bore the important part of the affairs of the community. He spent his entire life on the farm on which he was born, and even in recent years, had been active in the management of the farm, and in the affairs of the community. For many years he was a trustee of the Lebanon Cemetery Association, and for more years than the lifetime of the average man, he was active in the affairs of the old Lebanon Cumberland Presbyterian church. He was a man who made many friends, and he will be greatly missed in the home and in the community. Funeral services were held at the residence at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Ervin of Decatur, and burial was in Lebanon cemetery. Edith White Frerichs obit, unknown newspaper, 1959: Mrs. Edith Frerichs, of Athens, died at 6 a.m. today at her residence. She was 69 years old. Mrs. Frerichs was born in Menard County July 8, 1889, the daughter of John and Emmer Derry White. Surviving are her husband, Fred; one son, Howard, Athens; one daughter, Mrs. Glenna Mae England, Topeka, Kan,; brother, Robert White, R.R., Petersburg; three grandsons. Remains are at Mott & Son Funeral Home, Athens, where services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with burial in Hall Cemetery, Athens, Illinois. Evaline Roach Fisher obit, Petersburg Observer, 1897: Died - At the Residence of her son, Dr. J. C. Fisher, in Petersburg, Illinois, Tuesday, October 19, 1897. Mrs. Evaline L. Roach,, aged 75 years, 5 months and 27 days. The funeral service was held at the Cumberland Presbyterian church at 10 o'clock a.m. Thursday, October 21st, conducted by Rev. W. G. Archer. Burial at Lebanon cemetery. Mrs. Fisher had been in ill health for a long while, and the fact that she was so far advanced in years caused her to more easily succumb to the dread destroyer, death. She was a Christian lady, beloved and esteemed by all who knew her, and her death is mourned by a host of friends Effie Pond Roach obit, Petersburg Observer, 1933: Mrs. Effie K. Roach Dead - Death Occurred Sunday at Home of Sister; Funeral Held Tuesday. Mrs. Effie K. Pond was born January 24, 1859, near Concord, Morgan county, Illinois and died April 23, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Arthur Montgomery, aged 74 years and 3 months. She came to Menard county with her parents in 1869 and settled about one and one half miles west of Greenview. In 1880 she moved with her parents to the Irish Grove home. She united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at a very early age and remained a faithful member of the church as well as an active member up until the time of her death. She was married October 1897 to J. H. Roach, who preceded in death 19 years ago. She moved to Greenview in 1919. She was a member of a family of eight children, one sister, Della O. died in infancy, and one brother, Byron S., who died about 2 years ago. She leaves to mourn her passing Mrs. Arthur Montgomery of near Middletown, T. S. Pond and U. A. Pond, both of Greenview, Wm. M. Pond of Selma, Calif., and Mrs. Thomas DuPron of Greenview, besides a number of nieces and nephews and a great many friends both at Greenview and Irish Grove. The funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock April 25, at the Presbyterian Church of Greenview with Rev. Ernest C. Parish officiating, assisted by Rev. Wm. VanZile of Irish Grove. Interment was in the Irish Grove cemetery.
