He had been in poor health from heart trouble and debility of old age for several years but the last attack coming an hour the previous night exhausted his remaining strength. The funeral was held from the Irish Grove church Saturday June 13 at 10 o'clock with Rev. J.H. Norris officiating. A heavy rainstorm at the hour prevented many from attending but a large crowd was present to pay their last respect to the deceased. The pall bearers were Frank Worth, Evan Worth, James Worth, Arthur Montgomery, B. Pond and C.L. Ralford. Interment was made in Irish Grove cemetery. John Hamilton Roach, son of Rev. and Mrs. Needon Roach, was born in Tennessee, November 6, 1825. While a child of two years he came with his parents to Morgan county, Ill., living several years before the winter of the Big Snow and thereby earning a place in the ranks of the few remaining Snow Birds. His youth was spent in rural occupations and on February 19, 1846 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Artemiss Butler at Palmyra, Illinois. Five children were born to this union, only one of them surviving. Soon after marriage he came to Irish Grove and the latter years of his life have been peacefully spent on his farm three miles west of Middletown. On July 10, 1895 he suffered the loss of his helpmeet, by death. On October 14, 1897 he was again united in marriage to Effie J. Pond. Besides his wife he is survived by his son Charles N. Roach of the home, one granddaughter, Mrs. Etta M. Ralford and one great granddaughter, Edna Ralford, both of Bloomington. While a young Mr. Roach united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church and was a firm believer in its tenets. He was a member of the Irish Grove church for over 60 years.
