Biography for Meigs Wait Kendall

Meigs Wait Kendall is the owner of an excellent farm of two 
hundred and twelve acres on section 16, Perryton township, 
and there engages in general farming and stock raising. He 
was born in Preemption township, this county, on the 26th 
of January, 1870, a son of Augustus Kendall. The latter was
numbered among the well known farmers of Mercer county and 
owned and operated the farm on which our subject lives. His 
birth occurred in Chatauqua county, New York. January 4, 1836,
and his parents were Hazzard Kendall and Mary (Smith) Kendall, 
both natives of Connecticut. Hazzard Kendall was a son of 
Ebenezer Kendall, a native of Scotland. Augustus Kendall was 
married March 18, 1863, to Miss Lucretia Wait, a sister of 
Meigs Wait, one of the pioneers of Perryton township, a sketch 
of whom appears elsewhere in this work. Mr. Kendall became one 
of Perryton township's active and progressive farmers and 
stock raisers and there his death occurred February 9, 1914. 
He survived his wife but a few years, her death having occurred 
November 8, 1908. To their union four children were born, of 
whom Meigs Wait Kendall was the only son. The daughters are: 
Lettie, the wife of George Dunn, a farmer of Perryton township; 
Ida, the wife of Benjamin Halstead, of West Liberty, Iowa; and
Viola, the wife of Robert Candor, a lumberman and thoroughbred 
cattle breeder of Cogswell, North Dakota.

Mr. Kendall of this review was reared on the home farm and 
attended the common schools of the neighborhood. He 
supplemented his public school education with one year at 
the Presbyterian College at Geneseo, Illinois.  After leaving 
school he returned home and took charge of the farm. In the
intervening years he has carefully devoted his attention to 
the many branches of labor which together constitute 
agriculture and has improved his place, putting up woven 
wire fences and erecting the needed farm buildings, 
including engine house, silo, and garage, so that altogether 
his is one of the well managed and attractive farms of the 
township. He has engaged in buying and feeding stock for the 
market as well as in the cultivation of the fields and 
annually sells three carloads of cattle and one or two of 
hogs. He is a well known breeder of short-horn cattle and pure 
blooded Duroc Jersey hogs and finds this branch of farm work 
a very profitable one.

Mr. Kendall is a member of the Hamlet Presbyterian church and 
is quite prominent therein, serving as one of the trustees. 
He is a man of independent judgement in political affairs, 
feeling that the interests of the county can be be served 
by the election of the men best suited for office without 
regard to their party affiliations. In wisely directing his
business affairs and in seeing that his task is well 
performed, he has aided in the agricultural development of 
the county and has gained for himself an honorable place in
the estimation of his fellow citizens.
