Obituary of Charles YORK, Mercer County, Illinois This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Sharon Inman Charles York was born in the state of Kentucky August 4, 1825, and died in Millersburg July 23, 1903, aged 77 years, 11 months and 19 days. He was the eldest son of a family of six children, only one sister now remains on this earthly footstool. In 1843, at the age of 18 years, he came from Kentucky and settled on a farm near Keithburg, where he lived until 1863. Old settlers in that part of the county sorrow today because an old time friend has passed away. In 1855 he was united in marriage with Mary Jane Landreth, daughter of Zacharia and Elnore Landreth. This loving helpmeet passed to the eternal city on Dec. 28, 1900, and from that time Brother York has wandered in a solitary way, finding no city to dwell in until called to that city whose builder and maker is God. To this happy union was born eight children, three have passed away: Albert on Nov. 3, 1880, Mrs. Linnie Wood on March 22, 1896, and Mrs. Ella Parker on April 15, 1902. The living children are Mrs. Nettie Hess of Passadona, Cal., Mrs. Alice Stevens of Osceola, Iowa, Mrs. Olive Rodgers Martinsburg, Iowa; William L. York of Whittier, Cal. and Mrs. Eva Lunn of Millersburg. There are twenty-eight grandchildren and two great- grandchildren. Coming to the county a mere boy sixty years ago, he lived to see the county develop and the third generation come upon the scene of action. In 1868 he was converted at a revival held at what is known as the Lunn School House and with his wife, who had been a Christian for a number of years, united with the M.E. Church. He has ever since been a member of the M.E. Church, holding his relationship with the class at Millersburg. The grace of God did much for Brother York. Some of us seemingly need a greater supply than others. In hours of trial and temptation he found this grace sufficient. This grace increased as the flesh grew weak and during the last few months he was rested with an unshaken faith in a Saviour who was mighty to save---ready and willing to go when the Master called. The funeral services of Mr. York were held in the M.e. Church Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m., and was conducted by Rev. J.A. Alford his former pastor, assisted by Rev. W.A. Craine of the Millersburg M.E. church. Burial at Oak Ridge Cemetery. ***************************************************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
