Index of Remaining Tombstones at WARDERMAN CEMETERY ( also known as Columbia City Cemetery ) & Additions from city hall record Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives April 20, 2002 by Kathy & Vern Ritter ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warderman Cemetery is located in Columbia, Illinois at the intersection of Centerville Road and Riebeling Street. Chris Browne and Vern Ritter inventoried this cemetery in the fall of 2001 as a project for the Columbia Heritage and Preservation Commission. This cemetery will be designated as a Historic Landmark by the Commission and the City of Columbia in the spring of 2002. Warderman Cemetery is thought to have been started by an early Methodist Church in the area, but they never paid the filing fees, and the deed was never recorded. The cemetery has been "cared for" by the City of Columbia since 1893, and some claim as early as 1870. The care has not always been the best though, vandalism and time have taken their toll. Many graves are unmarked and there are stories of truck loads of broken tombstones being hauled away in the 1960's or early 1970's to make mowing easier. Tombstones classified "Unknown" have been deleted from this list. Known burials range from 1839 to 1974. Chris and Vern, with the help of volunteer Cub Scouts and commission members, were able to recover some tombstones that were discarded in an adjoining wooded area, some that had been shattered and fragments gradually disappeared under the turf, and some tombstones were found completely buried but still intact. Three of the original corner boundary markers for the Warderman family plot, within the cemetery, were still in place. The fourth corner marker was found and re-set by Vern using measurements based on the other three corners. A special "Thank You" should also be given to Charlotte Sturm, who started the work of inventorying this cemetery many years ago, but she lacked the help to dig, probe, and search the woods for missing stones. Her work was an asset to Chris and Vern. The cemetery is divided into a West Section and an East Section by a central driveway and flagpole. The tombstones in the West Section generally face East, following 18th and 19th century burial customs in this area. The tombstones in the East Section are all from 20th Century burials and most face south. All rows are counted from front to back and all tombstones are counted from left to right, facing the tombstones. A series of 12" x 12" concrete piers, poured flush with the ground and having a hole in the center of each for a pipe stanchion, are all that remain of a former barrier on the Centerville Road side of the cemetery.
