He married Mary Buscher in 1589. Mary was born in France and died 22 July 1616 at St. Helens, Bishopsgate, London, England. Mary Buscher was the daughter of Dominic and Genevive (?) Buscher. Dominic was born in Genoa, Italy. Documentation on Humphrey Basse can be found in the "Dictionary of Early Virginia Settlers" at the Virginia State Archives. Humphrey Basse held stock in the Virginia Company. Humphrey and Mary (Buscher) Basse were parents of the following children: Nathaniel Richard Humphrey William Mary Hester Humphrey Thomas Barnaby John Lidea Abigail Luke Sarah Samuel Nathaniel Basse was born in December of 1589 in England. He married Mary Jordan, daughter of Samuel and Cecily (?) Jordan, on 21 May 1613. Captain Nathaniel Basse was commissioned by the Virginia Company to transport immigrants from England to Isle of Wight County, Va. Captain Basse would be given land from the King of England and would establish his own plantation, named "Basse's Choice". On 22 March 1622, the Nansemond and other associated eastern Indian tribes, would massacre almost a third of the population at Isle of Wight County, murdering everyone on "Basse's Choice" including Captain Nathaniel Basse's two first born, young sons Humphrey and Samuel, who were both less than 10 years of age. Captain Nathaniel Basse was away in England at the time of the massacre. History of these events may be found in "History of Isle of Wight County" by Col. E.M. Morrison and in the "Book of John Bass of Norfolk, Va 1675", which is on file in the North Carolina State Archives. The book is a copy of the bible that belonged to Captain Nathaniel Basse and would later be given to his 3rd son John. Children of Captain Nathaniel Basse and his wife Mary Jordan were: Humphrey Samuel John William Anthony Edward Mary Genevive Ann Richard Gregory George stillborn child John Basse, son of Captain Nathaniel Basse and Mary Jordan, was born 07 September 1616 and died 02 April 1699 in Norfolk, Va. John married "Elizabeth Keziah Tucker", her given Christian name, the daughter of the Chief of the Nansemond Nation, Great Peter. This is documented thoroughly in the "Book of John Basse of Norfolk, Va". Children of John and Elizabeth Keziah (Tucker) Basse were: Nathaniel Keziah Elizabeth Jordan Samuel William Richard John William Basse, son of John and Elizabeth Keziah (Tucker) Basse, was born 29 March 1654 and died 13 August 1741. William married Catherine Lanier, who was full blood Nansemond Indian. This can be found in a decree on file in the North Carolina State Archives, where William Basse' descendants testify that he is part Nansemond Indian, not black or "Mulatto". There are also bible records on file in Dobbs County clarifying this. William Basse's will is also on file in the North Carolina State Archives, dated October 1740 and was originally filed in Chesapeake, Va Will Book H, page 8. Another source that documents the Basse History is "Bass Families of the South" by Dr. Albert Bell. A copy of the book may be found in the Atlanta, Texas Public Library. Commandant Jeremiah Slade, 1st Major James J. Hill and 2nd Major Andrew Joyner. The copy of the "Muster Rolls of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 Detached From The Militia of North Carolina in 1812 and 1814" may be found in the Evans Public Library in Vandalia, Fayette County, Il. The following history is taken from the "Past & Present of Montgomery County, Illinois" by Jacob Traylor pages 521-522. It states that Guilford Bass arrived in Fayette County, Il in the fall of 1827 and secured land from the government. It states he secured 40 acres and took up farming, but had learned the trade of a cooper early in life. It states he is buried on the old Bass Homestead in Ramsey township, Section 27, township 08N, Meridian 3, Section SESE, Range 01E. The 40 acres is now owned by a Mr. William Greenwood and Mr & Mrs. Sam Messina. As of January 27, 1999, the whereabouts of Guilford's grave is unknown. Mrs. Messina told me a story about a few graves near where she lives being pulled up as a joke and were thrown down a well many years ago. I sure hope that it wasn't Guilford's stone that met this fate. Guilford Bass's wife Mary is buried in Tennessee Cemetery in Oconee, Il and is in beautiful shape. It reads "Mary wife of G. Bass died March 5, 1872 aged 72 years". Guilford Bass's will is on file in Vandalia, Il dated 1846 and his son Jacob was named executor and Guardian of his minor children. Guilford and Mary (Proctor) Bass were parents of twelve children, ten sons and two daughters as follows: John Jacob William James W. David Henry Guilford Elijah Frances Josiah Mary died when 13 buried on old Bass homestead Martha died when 8 also buried on old Bass homestead Jacob Bass, son of Guilford and Mary (Proctor) Bass was born in Sumner County, Tennessee in 1822. On 12 June 1845 he would marry Nancy Davis, daughter of William and Phoebe (Crews) Davis in Fayette County, Il. Jacob would later purchase some 60 acres of land in Wilberton Township in Fayette County, Il and would build a steam-saw mill. One of the first roads built in that region connected Kinmundy, Il to Vandalia, so I suppose this would be the reason that Jacob and his wife would relocate to Marion County, Il. Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Bass would both die there, Jacob on 27 March 1884 and Nancy in 1908. Nancy was born 02 October 1825 in Pittsylvania County, Va. As of 1999, the burial location of Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Bass remains unknown. Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Bass were parents of: John Marshall Bass Henry Bass Elizabeth Bass Francis Marion Bass Harden Bass Caroline Bass Jasper N. Bass Elvina Bass John Marshall Bass, son of Jacob and Nancy (Davis) Bass was born in 1846 in Kinmundy, Il. He would later marry Mary Josephine Barron, date of marriage unknown, as no license has been found, only an obit of Mary Josephine (Barron) Bass dated 1911 and death certificate of John Bass dated10 March 1913, which names his father Jacob Bass. Both John and Mary Josephine (Barron) Bass are buried in Eastland Cemetery in Kinmundy, Il. No obit has been found for John Bass, as the Kinmundy Newspaper owner has the papers stacked floor to ceiling and none have ever been allowed to be microfilmed. It is truly a shame, history is sitting their being rapidly destroyed and no one can access it. I personally visited there about 2 years ago. There was once a fire in that same office and of course many burned as they were unprotected. The stone of John and Mary Josephine (Barron) Bass reads "John M. 1846-1913, Josephine 1846-1911, May Jones 1868-1907, Benjamin F. 1872-1877 and Robert E. 1887-1893. Another child born to them was Martha "Mattie" Elizabeth Bass born 19 Aug 1875. Martha Elizabeth Bass, daughter of John and Mary Josephine (Barron) Bass, was born 19 Aug 1875. She married Charles Henry Clayton on 29 June 1898 in Christian County, Il. Charles Henry Clayton was the son of Henry and Abigail (Chapman) Clayton, born 29 Sept 1876 in Navarre, Ohio. Henry Clayton was born in England and died in Oberlin, Ohio in 1878. Martha Elizabeth (Bass) Clayton died 14 December 1951 in Christian County, Il. Her husband Charles Henry Clayton died 07 Oct 1963 in Montgomery County, Il. Both Charles and Martha (Bass) Clayton are buried in Nokomis, Il. They were parents of the following children: Charles Leo Clayton Ethel Lillian (Clayton) Bradford Kupiec Charles Leo Clayton was born 05 April 1900 in Nokomis, Il and was delivered by his step grandfather Dr. William H. Geddy, who would marry Abigail (Chapman) Clayton after her first husband, Henry Clayton's death. Charles Leo Clayton would marry Suavilla Isadora Hulbert on 08 June 1921 in Nokomis, Il. Suavilla was the daughter of Warren Franklin and Lulu Luetta (Gage) Hulbert of Nokomis, Il. Suavilla (Hulbert) Clayton was born 06 January 1900 in Nokomis, Il. Charles Leo Clayton died 23 Aug 1987 in Montgomery County, Il and Suavilla died from a massive coronary on 01 May 1970 in rural Oconee, Il in Shelby County, Il. Leo Clayton was ill in the hospital at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Il at the time of his wife's death. Suavilla that morning had received a call from a neighbor inquiring as to whether or not she had a certain Raleigh product to sell her. Leo sold Raleigh Products on the side, as they farmed for a living. Suavilla left her neighbor friend on the phone and went out to their car to check for the particular product. Just as Suavilla arrived at the car, she suffered a massive coronary and expired where she stood, gashing her head on the front bumper. When Suavilla didn't return to the phone, the neighbors came to investigate. Her grandson Olin Clayton, was living in Chicago, Il at the time of her death. Both Leo and Suavilla are buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. They were parents of the following children: Paul, who died at birth Dale Everett Clayton Charles Warren Clayton Carl Marvin Clayton Dale Everett Clayton, son of Leo and Suavilla (Hulbert) Clayton, was born 01 Aug 1924 in Witt, Il.
