He was the son of Thomas Marsh FERREE (1801-1849), a native of Augusta, Bracken County KY and Esther Ann NELSON (1812-1880) a native of Clermont County Ohio. Thomas M. FERREE was engaged in merchantile pursuits in Clermont County OH and shortly after his marriage, in 1835, relocated to Montgomery County IL. He bought a farm in the area where their 6 children were born. The family remained on the farm until 1845, when Thomas Ferree took a contact to sprinkle the streets in St. Louis Mo where the family relocated until his death from cholera is 1849. His widow,Esther Nelson FERREE, then married Asa TURNER in 1850 in St. Louis, Missouri and the family returned to the family farm in Montgomery County where she lived for several years and then moved to Litchfield where she died at the advanced ago of 71 years in October 1882.. The parental FERREE family born in Hillsboro included: Snowden Richard (1836-1927) who relocated to Wellington Kansas Marshall O. (1841-abt 1864) enlisted in the United States service in 1861, was taken prisoner after the siege of Vicksburg and died in that foulest of Southern prisions, Andersonville Matthew O.(1841-abt 1864) Thomas M. (1849-abt 1920) relocated to Morton County, Kansas Sarah Antonia (1846-aft 1920)m. to Joseph A. Coatney, Litchfield, Illinois Jerome Dial FERREE was the second in order of birth of his parent's children. After the death of his father in St. Louis, he returned to Hillsboro, IL and there worked out by the month during the summer seasons on a farm and attended school during the winters and thus his life was spent until about 18 years of age. He then attended school in Litchfield for nearly three years receiving a good college education, which he afterward supplemented by teaching for almost three years. In 1860, he relocated to Keokuk, Iowa and was engaged as an employee in the fire insurance business and for himself in real estate. In 1871 he started the general agency of Iowa for the St. Louis Mutual Life Insurance Company and held that position until 1873 after which he was Special Agent for the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company for Iowa.In 1875 became general agent for Iowa of the Penn Mutual Life of Philadelphia. Jerome Dial then relocatede to Ottumwa, Iowa and organized the Ottumwa Loan and Building Association and in 1881 he organized the Iowa Mutual Aid Association of Ottumwa serving as Secretary of the two latter companies since their inception. Jerome Dial and his wife Susan Frances NELSON had nine children: Mary Ellen (1862-aft 1930) m. to Thomas Pugh MARTIN Sallie Bell (1863-1864) Bonnie Louise (1864-1919)m. to Thomas Bradford GARDINER George Nelson (1866-aft 1927) Frances Susan (1858-1951)m.to Willard E. CHAMBERS Alice May (1870-1879) Grace Besse (1872-1956)m.to Sidney D. McALLISTER Diasy Lenore (1875-1964)m.to John Franklin KERFOOT Violet Mignonette (1877-1940)m.to Charles Fison COLLISSON Politically, JEROME DIAL FERREE has always been a staunch Republican, but is not an active politician. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 1869 and his good wife belongs to the Episcopal Church.
