History William and Salome (Noble) Gage compiled by Mrs. Olin Dale Clayton of Raymond, Il. The above book may be purchased from Higginson Book Store in Salem, Mass. Thomas and Hannah (Warriner) Noble were the paternal 9th great grandparents of Olin Dale Clayton of Raymond, Il. Thomas Noble was born 1632 in England and died in Westfield, Mass 20 Jan 1704. In Boston 1653 (History of Boston, p. 331) was admitted 05 Jan 1653 as an inhabitant of Boston and opened an account in Springfield, Mass at the store of John Pynchon. A few years after removing to Springfield, Mass, he visited England on 1st Sept 1657 and was indebted to Mr. Pynchon in the amount of L 32 S3 D6 "To what I paid you for your passage to & from England & for your charges as in my pocket book, L1600.00 On 08 Dec 1664 Thomas Noble had "liberty granted him to erect a saw mill on the West side of Connecticut, 40 acres on a brook below Ensign Cooper's farm over Agawan River." Thomas Noble to pay off his debt to John Pynchon, was obliged to make over Mr. Pynchon's house and all his lands in 1667. Mr. Noble's residence in Westfield was about 2 1/2 miles east of the present center of the town, on the farm where his son, Deacon Thomas Noble, afterwards resided and which remained in the family until after his death in 1791, of his great grandson Lt. Stephen Noble, when it passed to the possession of Ambrose Day. Thomas Noble lived in Westfield, Mass in peace until the commencement of "King Philip's War" in 1675. In this war, says Rev. Dr. Davis "Mr. Noble was much exposed." "One night during family prayers Gray Lock, Chieftan of the Waranokes stepped up & pulled the string of his bow and let the doors swing open and soon as all was quiet, he would pull the string again. Mr. Noble was persuaded by his friends to move into town. Gray Lock said he had several opportunities of killing most of Thomas Noble's children, but didn't want scalps as much as captives." Thomas Noble was appointed constable of Westfield as reflected in Hampshire County Court, that on 07 April 1674 he was "sworne to discharge ye said office", which in those days was one of honor & trust. He took the Oath of Allegiance to his Majesty 23 Jan 1678. Thomas Noble joined Westfield Church on 20 Feb 1681 and was made Freeman, 12 Oct 1681 and at Hampshire county court 26 Sept 1682 took the "Freeman's Oath." Thomas Noble was once fined 5 shillings for traveling on "Fast Day", which the courts said "is a growing evil amongst us." Thomas Noble explained the great need for him to get to his family, but was fined anyway. In 1684, Thomas Noble's name was among the list of the most influential of townsmen upon the jury of inquest on the body of Eliezer Weller of Westfield, Mass. Thomas Noble was a farmer, but in the winter, worked a portion of the time as a tailor. Thomas Noble's will was proved 05 September 1704. He married Hannah Warriner, who was born in Springfield, Mass on 17 Aug 1643, the only daughter of William and Joanna (Scant) Warriner. Copy of book may be purchased at the Higginson Book Store in Salem, Mass. Hannah Warriner joined the Westfield Church 11 Nov 1680. After Thomas Noble's death, Hannah (Warriner) Noble married Deacon Medad Pomeroy of Northampton, Mass., on 24 Jan 1705. Medad Pomeroy was baptized in Windsor, Connecticutt 19 Aug 1638, the son of Eltweed Pomeroy. Deacon Pomeroy was a blacksmith, town clerk, Deacon and Representative. He was first married to Experience Woodward, daughter of Henry Woodward and she died 08 June 1682 and he secondly married Mrs. Abigail Chauncy, daughter of John and Abigail (Ford) Strong and widow of Rev. Nathaniel Chauncy of Hatfield. She died 15 Apr 1704. Medad Pomeroy died 30 December 1716 and Hannah (Warriner) Noble Pomeroy survived him and in Medad Pomeroy's will dated 04 Jan 1709 makes the most liberal provision that at his decease "she shall have liberty to choose what cow she will out of ye cows and to have returned to her, all such things as she brought." Hannah died 12 May 1721. Children of Thomas and Hannah (Warriner) Noble were: John, Hannah, Thomas, Matthew, Mark, Elizabeth, Luke, James, Mary and Rebecca. Matthew Noble, son of Thomas and Hannah (Warriner) Noble, was born abt 1668 and died in Sheffield, Mass about 1744. Matthew was the first white man who came to reside in Sheffield, Mass. He was from Westfield and came and spent the first winter here with no other human associates than the Indians, living in an erected wigwam. He married Hannah Dewey 10 Dec 1690. She was born 21 Feb 1672, daughter of Thomas and Constant (Hawes) Dewey. See the "Genealogy of Admiral George Dewey" available through Higginson Book Store in Salem, Mass. Hannah (Dewey) Noble was last known to be alive 09 July 1745. Matthew and Hannah (Dewey) Noble were parents of: Joseph, Hezekiah, Matthew, Solomon, Elisha, Obadiah, Hannah, Hester and Rhoda. Elisha Noble was a Captain in the French & Indian War, who commanded a Company of men, who enlisted for reinforcing the army destined for Crown Point. One of those men in the Company he commanded, would be his nephew Peter Noble, the son of his brother Obadiah Noble. Obadiah Noble, son of Matthew and Hannah (Dewey) Noble was born in Westfield, Mass. 19 Oct 1705 and died in Sheffield, Mass in 1786. He was early at Sheffield, the 1st town meeting having been held in 1733, at his house. He married Mary Bosworth, daughter of Phillip Callendar. Obadiah Noble's will is dated 14 Oct 1785 and he names his sons, Peter, Nathaniel, Zachariah, Obadiah, Ezekiel and daughter in law Susannah Fairchild. Peter Noble, son of Obadiah and Mary (Callendar) Noble was born in Sheffield, Mass 22 May 1734 & died in Whitehall, N.Y.Sept or Oct 1806. He removed to Tinmouth, Vt and thence abt 1783 to Whitehall, N.Y. In the French and Indian War, he enlisted in 1755, in the Company formed by Captain Elisha Noble, his Uncle, to reinforce the army destined for Crown Point. Peter Noble married (1) 30 March 1757 Abigail Eggleston, who is said to have been of Irish or Welsh descent and she was born 22 March 1741, daughter of Joseph & Abigail (Ashley) Eggleston. Children of Peter and Abigail (Eggleston) Noble were: Mary, Solomon, Obadiah, Clark, Henry, Huldah, Henry, William, Abigail, Electa, Peter, Louisa, Henry, Paul and Miranda. Solomon Noble, son of Peter and Abigail (Eggleston) Noble, was born in Sheffield, Mass on 07 June 1759 and died in Cornwall, Canada East abt Apr 1831. He was 1st married to Lucy Holcomb 05 June 1783 in Sheffield, Mass. She was born June 20-22 1766, daughter of Jonathan and Abigail (Hilliard) Holcomb. His 2nd wife was Mrs. Dorothy Tuttle, who died abt 1853. Children of Solomon and Lucy (Holcomb) Noble were: Salome, Henry, Julia and Mira. Salome Noble, daughter of Solomon and Lucy (Holcomb) Noble, was born 25 Jan 1786 and died 09 April 1825. She married William Montgomery Gage, on 01 Dec 1803, son of Walter and Phoebe (?) Gage. Walter Gage served as a Pvt in the Revolutionary War with the State of Vermont and he was the son of Captain William Montgomery Gage, who served in the same state. Children of William and Salome (Noble) Gage were: Deidamia, Chrislor, Harriet, Julia, Horace, Horatio, James, Whitney and Amos. After Salome's death William Montgomery Gage married Abigail Higbee of Chittenden, Vermont and she died 14 Feb 1879. William Gage died 01 Oct 1856. Children of William and Abigail (Higbee) Gage were: Myra, Abigail, Walter, Orange and Salome. Amos Barnum Gage, son of William Montgomery and Salome (Noble) Gage, was born 04 April 1821 in Vermont and married Susan M. Fonda on 08 May 1842. Susan was of Dutch descent, the daughter of Isaac and Maria (Van der Bers) Fonda, grandaughter of Isaac and Cornelia (de Forest) Fonda, great grandaughter of Isaac and Alida (Lansing) Fonda, great, great grandaughter of Douw and Rebecca (Conyn) Fonda and great, great, great grandaughter of Jellis Douws Fonda, who was born about 1630 in Holland, son of Douw Fonda who came to Beverwyck, New York in 1654. He married about 1660 in Albany, New York to Hester Douwese Van Arentsvelt, daughter of Douwese Jansen deVries Van Arentsvelt. Jellis & Douw Fonda were also grandparents of the late actor Henry Fonda. History of this family is on file in Fonda, N.Y. Susan (Fonda) Gage died 10 March 1880 and Amos Gage died 11 Nov 1870. Children of Amos and Susan (Fonda) Gage were: William Montgomery Gage II (paternal 2nd great grandfather of Olin D. Clayton), James Horatio Gage, Amos Whitney Gage and Effie Noble Gage. Amos and Susan (Fonda) Gage's name is found on the marriage license of their son William Montomery Gage, which is on file at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Hillsboro, Il. William Montgomery Gage, son of Amos and Susan (Fonda) Gage was born 11 Nov 1843 in Cahoes, New York and died 23 Feb 1934 in Nokomis, Il. He married Mary Melissa Sides, daughter of Matthias and Sarah (Bost) Sides of Nokomis, Il, on 27 Oct 1878. Mary (Sides) Gage died 13 July 1930. Marriage license is on file in the Montgomery County Courthouse in Hillsboro, Il, along with both their death certificates. William Montgomery Gage was a skilled cabinet maker and was Secretary of the 1st Carpenters Union established in Nokomis, Il. Children of William and Mary (Sides) Gage were: Lulu Luetta (Gage) Hulbert, Elmer Gage, Suavilla Edna Gage and Curtis Burwell Gage. Suavilla Edna Gage died 04 December 1890 in Nokomis, Il and Curtis Burwell Gage died in a tragic drowning accident on 13 July 1911, in Christian County, Il. Both Suavilla, Curtis and their parents are buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il and have no stone to mark their graves. Lulu Luetta Gage, daughter of William and Mary (Sides) Gage was born 13 July 1880 in Nokomis, Il and married Warren Franklin Hulbert, son of Warren Moses and Martha (Traylor) Hulbert, on 05 Dec 1898 in Nokomis, Il. Warren Franklin Hulbert was born 01 Nov 1876 in Nokomis, Il. Warren Franklin Hulbert died 20 Aug 1959 and Lulu (Gage) Hulbert died 11 May 1960. Warren and Lulu (Gage) Hulbert are buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Marriage and death certificates are on file in Montgomery County, Il. Warren and Lulu (Gage) Hulbert were parents of the following children: Suavilla Isadora Hulbert, Lloyd William Hulbert, Howard E. Hulbert, Everett W. Hulbert, Grace E. Hulbert, Edna Hulbert and Ida Mae Hulbert. Suavilla Isadora Hulbert was born 06 Jan 1900 in Nokomis, Il, the daughter of Warren Franklin and Lulu Luetta (Gage) Hulbert. Suavilla attended Nokomis schools and after college taught piano. She married Charles Leo Clayton on 08 June 1921 in Nokomis, Il, the son of Charles Henry and Martha Elizabeth (Bass) Clayton. Charles "Leo" and Suavilla Clayton farmed all their lives and were active in the Baptist Church in Nokomis, Il for many years. Leo served as a deacon of the church, Suavilla taught Sunday school and was a member of the Navy Mothers Club. Suavilla died 01 May 1970 suffering a massive coronary at their home in Oconee, Shelby County, Il and Leo died 23 Aug 1987 while a resident of the old Taylor Springs Nursing Home. Both Leo and Suavilla are buried in the Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Marriage and death certificates are on file at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Hillsboro, Il. Charles Leo and Suavilla Isadora (Hulbert) Clayton were parents of: Paul, who died at birth, Dale Everett Clayton, Charles Warren Clayton and Carl Marvin Clayton. Dale Everett Clayton was born 01 Aug 1924 in Nokomis, Il, the son of Charles Leo and Suavilla Isadora (Hulbert) Clayton. Dale grew up on a farm all his life and graduated from Hillsboro High School. He attended University of Illinois and then was drafted during WW II, serving as a Radarman 2nd Class aboard the carrier Nehenta Bay. Dale married Lavonne Armentrout, daughter of the late John and Myrtle (Eddington) Armentrout, on 01 March 1945 at the Armentrout farm in rural Witt, Il. Lavonne (Armentrout) Clayton worked for H & R Block for 25 years as a tax preparer. Dale and Lavonne (Armentrout) Clayton are parents of : Kenneth Melvin Clayton, Merle Everett Clayton, Olin Dale Clayton, Anita Elaine (Clayton) Wahlsmith, Yvonne Marie (Clayton) Hicks, James Dean Clayton, Lester Norman Clayton, Gail Irene (Clayton) Kessler and Janice Eileen (Clayton) Volentine. Olin Dale Clayton was born 20 Mar 1951 in Hillsboro, Il, son of Dale and Lavonne (Armentrout) Clayton. Olin married Barbara Hays, daughter of the late Dewey and Florence (Altevogt) Hays, on 06 Aug 1976, in the Witt United Methodist Church, which many of the Clayton family have been married in. Olin is employed with Bridgestone/Firestone Tire in Decatur, Il and Barbara is a traveling RN. Olin and Barb (Hays) Clayton are parents of: Belinda Suzanne Clayton born 27 June 1979 and Andrew Olin Dale Clayton born 08 August 1980, both in Montgomery County, Il. Andrew is a Senior at Raymond Lincolnwood High School in Raymond, Il, as of Jan 1999 and Belinda is a full time Communications Major at LLCC in Springfield, Il.
