Biographical Sketch of Edward Traylor - Montgomery County, Illinois This Biography is on the lineage of Edward Traylor, the paternal 8th great grandfather of Olin Clayton of Raymond. The microfilm copy of this record is on file at the Richmond, Virginia Archives, author was Lottie Williamson Hines. Edward Traylor was born at Nouzon, in the Ardennes, France, May 7, 1639. He married Martha Randolph (one of four sisters of William Randolph of "Turkey Island")Their children were: William, Edward and Hildreth, who married a Hankins. William Traylor, the son of Edward and Martha (Randolph) Traylor was born in England 1674 and came to America in 1690 and died 1753 at Petersburg, Virginia. He married Judith Archer, daughter of George Archer and Elizabeth Harris of Moreland, Virginia. Humphrey Traylor, the son of William and Judith (Archer)Traylor, was born 1711 and died 1790. He married about 1736 to Elizabeth Cousins. Humphrey Traylor, the son of Humphrey and Elizabeth (Cousins) Traylor, was born in 1746 and died September 20, 1802 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He married about 1770 to Sarah Cousins and she died December 20, 1818. Humphrey Traylor was a Revolutionary War Patriot, serving as a Private in the Virginia Militia at King's Mountain, under Isaac Shelby. Humphrey Traylor also furnished materials for the Virginia State Militia and for the United States Army in Chesterfield County, Virginia. See the certified copies of manuscripts called Public Claims, Original on file, in the Archives Department of the Virginia State Library. James Traylor, the son of Humphrey and Sarah (Cousins) Traylor, was born April 5, 1784 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He married twice, first to a Nancy Cardwell, who came from a family of North Carolina planters and she died in 1817. In the microfilm, history is given by Clem Traylor, regarding Nancy Cardwell's brother, Peter Cardwell's will, where she was named heir. James later married Barbara (?) Traylor and she died June 12, 1857. James and Barbara, along with their children, show up on the Montgomery County census in 1850. Both James and Barbara died in Montgomery County and are buried in the old Nichols Cemetery in Coffeen, Il. James and Barbara Traylor's wills are on file at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Hillsboro, Il. Caleb W. Traylor, son of James and Nancy (Cardwell)Traylor, was born in 1809 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia and died in 1863 in Montgomery County, Il. Caleb's last will and testament is on file at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Hillsboro,Il. I think he died from an infection secondary to having an arm amputated, as there is a Dr's bill among his will documents, showing a debt of $25.00 for amputating his arm in May of 1863, by a Dr Owen Stratton. Caleb I believe, also owned a lumber mill, as there is a land and property sale add, also among Caleb's will documents and a great deal of lumber and livestock were sold. A steam mill was also located on a specific tract of land, owned by Caleb Traylor. Caleb married a Martha (?) Traylor and she died April 21, 1856. Both are buried in the old Nichols Cemetery in Coffeen, Il. Anita Wahlsmith of Oconee, Olin Clayton's sister, owns a bible that belonged to Caleb W. Traylor. Martha, the twin daughter of Caleb and Martha Traylor, was born February 17, 1835 in Zanesville, which dates the Traylor families first arrival in Montgomery County and she was the fourth wife of Warren Moses Hulbert. They married on April 7, 1875 in Montgomery County, Il and their wedding license is on file at the Historic Montgomery County Courthouse. Martha died November 10, 1904 and her husband Warren M. Hulbert died January 1, 1906. They are both buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Warren F. Hulbert, son of Warren M and Martha (Traylor) Hulbert was born November 1, 1876 in Nokomis, Il and died August 20, 1959. He married Lulu Luetta Gage on December 5, 1898 in Nokomis, Il. Lulu Gage was born July 13, 1880, the daughter of William Montgomery and Mary Melissa (Sides) Gage. Lulu Hulbert died May 11, 1960 in Montgomery County, Il. Both Warren and Lulu Hulbert are buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Suavilla Isadora Hulbert, daughter of Warren and Lulu (Gage) Hulbert was born January 6, 1900 in Nokomis, Il. On June 8, 1921 she married Charles Leo Clayton, son of Charles and Martha (Bass) Clayton. Charles Leo Clayton was born April 5, 1900 in Montgomery County, Il. Suavilla and Charles had four sons, Paul, who died at birth, Dale, Warren and Carl. Suavilla Clayton died May 1, 1970 and Leo died August 23, 1987. Both Charles and Suavilla Clayton are buried in Nokomis Cemetery in Nokomis, Il. Dale Clayton, son of Charles Leo and Suavilla (Hulbert) Clayton, was born August 1, 1924 in Nokomis, Il. On March 1, 1945, while on leave from the US Navy during WW II, he married Lavonne Armentrout, daughter of John and Myrtle (Eddington) Armentrout, who was born April 22, 1925 in Witt, Il. Dale served in the US Navy as a Radarman 2nd Class aboard the carrier Nehenta Bay. Dale and Lavonne are parents of Kenneth, Merle, Olin, Anita, Yvonne, James, Lester, Gail and Janice. Olin Clayton, son of Dale and Lavonne (Armentrout) Clayton, was born March 20, 1951 in Hillsboro, Il. He attended Witt Schools his entire life and married Hazel Hedburg in Chicago, Il, but they divorced two years later, with no children born to that union. Olin later met and married Barbara Hays, daughter of the late Dewey and Florence (Altevogt) Hays. Barbara was born June 23, 1958 in Springfield, Il and married Olin Clayton on August 6, 1976 in Witt, Il. They are the parents of Belinda Suzanne Clayton, born June 27, 1979 and Andrew Clayton, born August 8, 1980. They all presently reside in Raymond, Il. Olin worked for Hillsboro Glass for over 20 years and it closed in August of 1997. Olin is now employed with Bridgestone/Firestone in Decatur, Il.
