News Article about Warren M. Hulbert - Montgomery County, Illinois "FREE-PRESS GAZETTE" December 27, 1878 An accident that almost proved fatal befel Mr. Warren M. Hulbert on Tuesday afternoon. He had been north of town to N. H. Coffey's farm for a load of corn. He put on a load of about 30 bushels and when the accident happened was walking beside the wagon on his way home. The road was rounding and frozen hard and the wagon commenced slipping towards the side Mr. Hulbert was on, down the slant. In attempting to step out of the way, his foot slipped and he fell with his head directly in front of the hind wheel of the wagon. As he was falling he shouted to the horses to stop, but the wheel caught him behind his right ear and he was dragged several feet, the wheel slipping on the snow instead of passing over his head. The horses stopped just in the nick of time and Mr. Hulbert was almost miraculously saved from his perilous position, receiving only severe bruises and a bad cut on the back of his head by the wheel tire. Dr. Tilden attended to the wound and we are glad to say the gentleman is recovering. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
