"FREE PRESS=GAZETTE" Friday, February 18, 1881 "NEARLY FATED" "MISSES MINNIE AND LAURA WETMORE NARROWLY ESCAPE SUFFOCATION FROM" "CARBONIC GAS" Probably one of the narrowest escapes from suffocation, that has ever came to pass in our midst, occurred last Monday night in the family of Mr. R.E. Wetmore. The victims being Misses Minnie and Lura Wetmore, whose sleeping apartment was in connection with a room containing an Anthracite coal base-burner. Upon retiring in the evening, proper attention had not been given the stove, some of the doors being unfastened, with drafts closed. They fell to sleep unconscious of their condition, or of the escape of gas and not until after midnight was any signal given to call the attention of the remaining household. When assistance came both were found in an insensible state, not able to speak. A physician was summoned and by his treatment were restored. The decision of the physician was, that had they remained but a few minutes longer without aid, fatal results would have followed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organization or persons.
