Mrs. Brakenhoff, nee Trientje Arkebauer, was born July 4, 1841 in Neufirrel, Ostfriesland, Germany and accompanied her parents to this country when but four years of age. The trans-oceanic trip was made in a sailing vessel and occupied a period of three months. The family first settled, in this state, where the deceased grew to womanhood. In 1858 she was married in Staunton to George Brakenhoff. About nine years later she, with her husband, moved to this vicinity settling on a farm four and three-fourths miles west of this city where they resided many years. To the above mentioned union were born fourteen children, six, with the father preceding the mother in death. Those surviving are Mrs. Oltman Brakenhoff, Eilert, John and Robert of this city; Mrs. John Slaughter, residing northwest of here; Henry Brakenhoff, of northwest of town; Mrs. Andrew Pereboom, of Burke, South Dakota, and Garrelt Brakenhoff, of San Diego, California.
