Hillsboro, IL, page 1 The funeral services for John B. Cress, who was fatally injured in an automobile accident in Washington, D. C., Wednesday morning, July 9th, 1941, were held Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Hillsboro, Short services were held at the home of his mother, Mrs. Mattie Cress, at Cresswood, north of Hillsboro. The Rev. Ezra Keller officiated at the services and burial was made in the Cress family lot at Cress Hill cemetery, west of Hillsboro. John Baird Cress was born April 26, 1901in Hillsboro, IL, the son of William Springer Cress and Mattie (Schoff) Cress. He married Miss Gertrude McAllister and they had two children: Ellen Marie and Martha Janet. Mr. Cress, who held a civil service position in the road material testing laboratories of the Department of Agriculture at Washington, was fatally injured while on his way to work Wednesday morning, the day before he was to leave Washington to spend his vacation here with his mother and his sister, Miss Marie Cress. Mr. Cress was working at the laboratories which are located outside of Washington, on the way to Mt. Vernon, and near a large army airport that is being built there. He rode a bicycle to work, because of the distance of the laboratories from his home, and which was within a short distance of the laboratories when he was struck by an automobile driven by an army officer from the new airport. There were no witnesses to the accident and the army officer said he didn't see Mr. Cress until an instant before he hit him. The deceased was severely injured in the crash and was knocked unconscious. He was identified by a fellow workman from the laboratories immediately after the accident and was rushed to a hospital in Alexandria, Virginia, where he died two and a half hours later. His remains were brought to Hillsboro for burial by his widow and his wife's sister, Mrs. Chris Tucker of Washington, D. C. The remains arrived here Saturday afternoon and were taken to his mother's home that evening.
