Madison, Wisconsin, page 1 Joseph E. Cress, was born April 17, 1856 at Hillsboro, Illinois, a son of Jacob Cress Jr. and Helena (Scherer) Cress, and died December 31, 1934 at his home southwest of Ramona, South Dakota, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 14 days. The funeral was held at the late residence January 2, 1934, conducted by the Reverend Kowalke and graveside services under the auspices of the Odd Fellows Lodge, of which he had been a member for almost 30 years. Burial will be in Ramona, South Dakota He came to South Dakota in September 1882 and filed on a homestead which he has attained until the present time. He spent the winter in Sioux Falls, returning to Lake County in the spring of 1883. In May 25, 1883, of that year he was united in marriage to Melissa Frances Gordon of Hillsboro, Illinois, in Madison, Wisconsin, and she passed away in July 07, 1908. He is survived by three sons and two daughters: Frank Gordon, Nellie Jane, and Harry Joseph, who are at home. Will of Mandan, North Dakota, and Irene Helena, now Mrs. Eric Gabriel Leander of Evanston, Illinois. There are also two grandchildren and two brothers, Benjamin Lewis Cress of Red Cliff, Colorado, and Jacob Daniel Cress of Dinuba, California. One son, Orville Blackman Cress and a daughter, Elva M. Cress preceded him in death. For about six months, Mr. Cress was a patient sufferer. Loving children did all they could to nurse their beloved father back to health, but age and disease were too much for him to combat. Finally, a Loving God called him home to receive his eternal rest. Mr. Cress was a loving husband, a kind father and a good home builder, and a kind and helpful neighbor and a true citizen. He will be missed by his loved ones, friends and neighbors.
