Obituary of Isaac Thomas Towell - Montgomery County, Illinois This is the obit of Isaac Thomas Towell, the maternal 2nd great grandfather of Olin Clayton of Raymond Aged Civil War Veteran Passed Away Thursday Isaac Thomas Towell of Near Chapman Died Thursday Afternoon, May 26, Aged "Four Score and Five Years" Isaac Thomas Towell, one of the oldest and most prominent citizens of Fillmore township, died on Thursday afternoon, May 26, at 3 o'clock, aged 85 years and 2 months. The deceased was born in White County, Illinois, March 26, 1836 and came to this country with his parents, William M and Martha (Stark) Towell, when a boy and spent the remainder of his life here. The deceased was united in marriage July 4, 1860, to Elizabeth Jane Chapman and nine children were born to this union, all of whom survive their father. Besides these nine children, the deceased leaves thirty four grandchildren and twenty five great grandchildren. All of the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were present at the funeral. The surviving children are John W. Towell of Hillsboro, Mrs. Laura Lee and Mrs. Martha Bauerle of Witt, Il, Nora Best of Ladonia, Missouri and Mrs. Ida Armentrout of Witt, Il, Mrs. Eva Wright of Donnellson, Il, Elmer I. Towell of Coffeen, Il, Mrs. Maude Stephenson of Chapman, Il and Isaac T. Towell Jr., with whom he made his home. He also leaves 2 brothers, Samuel and Charles Towell and one sister, Mrs. Nora DeGrote of Smithsboro, Il. At the beginning of the Civil War, the deceased enlisted with the first who volunteered their services, during the first three months. At the expiration of this period, he re-enlisted and served until May 2, 1865 with Company A, 3rd Illinois Cavalry. The deceased was at one time a member of the Masonic Lodge of Irving and the GAR. He was a man who was held high in esteem by all who knew him and for many years was considered one of the leading citizens of Fillmore township, where he has resided for more than a quarter of a century. The wife of the deceased passed away April 7, 1907 and since that time, has resided with his son, Isaac T. Towell Jr. The funeral services were held at the church in Chapman, Saturday morning, May 28, and the remains were buried in Bost Hill Cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.T.
